Hey all. I'm currently on the road in Syria and I just ran through a wicked sandstorm. The foam air filter on my KLR 650 needs cleaing in a bad way, but I'm out of air filter oil and I can't find any for sale. What should I use as a substitute? Everyone here suggests gear oil, which I can buy. Will this be a problem if I have to run it for a while? Also, would it be better to run a dirty filter with the proper oil, or a clean filter with gear or engine oil?

I'd go with gear oil if I couldn't find air filter oil. You're looking for something sticky and something that won't just drain out of the filter like typical motor oil will.

Clean the filter, let it dry, and stick the filter in a zip loc bag, or something on the line. Dump a bit of oil in the bag and squeeze it into the filter for a while, and then carefully wring the excess oil from the foam.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I should make it to Damascus with what I have and hopefully find filter oil there.

Oh, and as for pictures, due to the "shakey" connections I've been finding on the road, I'm only really putting trip reports and photos on my website right now (one site is a lot to maintain sometimes!) Check it out. Maybe I'll post some ride reports and photos on other sites when I return to Canada.

first of all K&N states on their industrial spec sheet that the air filter oil in the Aerosol can must weight at least 7.5 cSt (centistokes) at 100 C. A blend of 80W and 85W SAE oil matches that. I've been using 85W straight oil for several years with no issues. I also use Krud Kutter (same metasilicate cleaner) as the expensive K&N air filter cleaner. Just make sure to rinse any degreaser even K&N well before adding oil - otherwise the oil will be saponified and converted to fatty acids then will gunk up your engine.

10W 4.1 - 5.6
15W -5.6
##W-20 9.3 - 12.5
##W-40 12.5 - 16.3
##W-50 16.3 - 21.9

Can you get chain saw oil? That stuff is tacky.

Can you mix chain lube with motor oil and make a tacky filter oil?

Chain lube is 14 cSt or double that of K&N. They add tackifiers and solvent to then convert the oil to a more semi-solid ocnsistency after application. K&N oil left on a surface stays liquid.

DO NOT USE K & N Air Filter oil on a Foam air filter!! It is TOO thin to stay in the FOAM! And not very 'sticky'. It will allow the finer, talcum powder dust to pass thru and into your engine.

On KLR650 OEM foam air filter, 10W40 engine oil Will Work! Straight Grade 40, 50, or even 90 does Not migrate around the air box as much.
Coarser Foam Air filters, like UNI-Filter work better with the 'Tackier/Stickier' oils like UNI, Bel-Ray, PJ-1, Maxima, etc.

So is Maxima not the stuff to use on the OEM filter? I ask because that's what I serviced mine with. Should I clean it off and use oil? Or is it OK to continue with the Maxima sticky stuff....And yeah its sticky.

Agreed. Engine oil is what Kawasaki recommends in the owners manual and it is what I have used for 100k miles in my KLR. At cleaning time the filter is always dirty on the outside and clean on the inside. No dirt is getting through. In a tight pinch you could even rob a couple of ounces from the crankcase for the filter.

Maxima FFT (Foam Filter Treatment) is one of the Many air filters oils Specifically intended for use on Foam Air filters.
No need for you to re-service your OEM foam air filter!
