For a few months Ive been thinking of getting a commuter that's better than my KLR. I've considered several bikes ranging from GSes to Versys to WeeStroms, but I think Im going to pull the trigger on a 2009 Yamaha FZ6.
Ive been looking for something I can commute on that gets good MPG, is comfortable and closer to the ground, easy/cheap maintenance, better headlight, aftermarket support and can double as a light tourer and handle two up for day trips. I think an FZ6 covers all of those items, with a few additional pluses, fuel injection, a centerstand, nearly 100HP and its just plain attractive. The only thing the FZ doesnt have that I would like is ABS.
Dont get me wrong, I love my KLR, its going to be very hard to part with, but it just doesnt feel like the right tool for the job Im doing. When I bought the KLR my plan was to do some trail and two track riding with my wife (she had a TW200 that we just sold) but we found out that she really doesnt like riding her own motorcycle and most of my riding has been commuting on the roads. At times we have taken small trips two up on the KLR. My wife and I are not small people (combined weight of 360-370, I wont go into the exact division) and the KLR just isnt big enough to be comfortable.

i suggest you not pull the trigger just yet and keep looking. you never know what you might come across. there are some killer deals to be made out there and you never know, someone might want to trade bike for bike for a klr. there are people out there. either way good luck!

A trade would be ideal. Ive done the pink slip trade before and It really makes it a no brainer.
I had hopes of working a trade with the guy I talked to today that had an FZ for sale. He told me he liked to dual sport ride and missed riding off road so I was really pushing for a trade, but the reason he was selling the FZ was because he needed the money for his sons college bills.

Good call.
I found an 09 Versys for sale that I liked. On a whim I rode the KLR to meet the guy with the Versys and he liked the KLR as much as I liked the Versys. We swapped titles (I kicked in some cash as well). The Versys is just as awesome as the KLR, just in different ways. I paid a little more than I wanted to for the Versys but its worth it to not have to mess with selling the KLR and it cost less when we titled them because it was a trade.
I've had to blow the dust off the credit card again. I ordered a bunch of luggage and some other nic-nacs for the Versys, the farkling begins.

I had one... It was an ok lil bike, but it was a bit buzzy and shifting was notchy.. I was hoping it could be my sport touring bike, but sold it last spring after picking up my BMW GS.. The Givi luggage system for the FZ6 was excellent!!
