Yes, I searched but can't find any info. I can get a nice used one but they say its for a 08+ KLR. Thanks for any help!

If you are referring to the OEM plastic AIR DAM (doesn't really protect well enough, not nearly long enough at rear), you will need the front Gen 2 brackets also.

Better to purchase a real metal Skid Plate.

I'm talking about an aluminum skid plate. I guess they are different as most I've seen for sale are for 08+

If the aluminum skid plate U-bolts to the front down tube of the frame it will fit all years of KLR650 1987-2018.

If the front section the skid plate mounts by 2 bolts, about 3 inches to either side of the front down tube, then one needs Gen 2 front motor mount plates with the skid plate tabs.

I haven't seen that plate before. I like that it looks long enough to go to the rear frame cross pipe. But,

The 4 lower clamps do not appear to be in the correct positions for a KLR650.

The rear hole might be too far forward and too far to the left to actually allow access to the engine oil drain plug on a KLR650.

The forward hole looks to be about in the correct position to access to the forward crankcase drain plug of a KX450 F. No reason to have a hole there on a KLR650.

Show me the label or instructions that says it is to fit a KLR650.

The more I look at this skid plate, the more I think I understand its construction.

The Gen 2's don't have the 6mm skid plate mounting bolt at the front center frame pipe like a Gen 1. That 1/2 tall mount possibly pulls the plate to far forward on a Gen 1, for the forward bottom clamps to be in correct position. The forward bottom clamps may fit on the 'Y' of the frame, instead of on the straight sections which I am used to.
One could cut that little bracket off of a Gen 1 frame.

The large forward hole is possibly for the bottom of the large frame down tube to protude down thru a bit. But that 1/2 inch tall mounting tab above is again causing mis-alignment.

The staggered rear clamps with the 2 position LH clamp may allow for gear pedal clearance on the down-shift stroke when using OEM vs Aftermarket brand gear pedals.


A KX450F would be quite a bit narrower than a KLR650. Does this skid plate appear to allow about 1/4 - 1/2 inch clearance between both the flywheel cover & waterpump? It might be a GEN 2 KLR650 skid plate after all!

Its hard to angle it right due to the single mount on the frame but does seem to have 1/4" of clearance on both sides. Thanks for all the help.
