So I just got a 1994 650 and I am getting a backfire. Just one pop right when I pull the clutch to shift. Has a super trap exhaust. Also it seems sluggish to me. Any suggestions on where to start. My brain says carb clean but I'll defer to the knowledge on this forum

Check for an exhaust leak at the head. The bolts come loose.

So I looked into it today. I removed the passenger side cover and I noticed that it appears the air box cover is missing in action. I can see straight into the air filter. I am assuming this would cause a lean condition. Can I just seal it with duct tape temporarily to see if it improves

Problem solved. Fashioned a new air filter cover and turned out the mixture screw to adjust for the aftermarket exhaust and my backfire on decel is gone. And I have better throttle response as well.
