Beautiful day out, sunny and mid fifties.I have needed to get about a 1000 bd ft of
lumber planed to finish out some trim around our place. So before the weather turns
ugly,I jumped on it first thing this morning.Ran the first board thru, and wasn't happy with
the results,so shut down and changed blades.Brand new blades.they were 24 inchers
and I needed 20s, so I cut them down and installed them, checked the torque and clearances,
and good to go.Fired back up and everything was fine for about six boards then BAM,I hit a foreign
object with the parallel board I was feeding at the same time. It's a pretty good size planer with a
seperate feed roll drive from the knives,so nothing quit until I could get it shut down.

The lumber I was going to plane

Planed lumber

This is the shot of the end of the parallel board I had just started to feed
There is a nut looking indentation in the wood. Now I'm not sure if this was in or
on the board, but it went thru the knives reguardless

I know all the local mills around here have so-called trophies on the walls from things
found in the timber.I have planed some in the past, but generally they just take a chunk
of knife out. This, however, sounded like a cannon going off.I'm just glad the guard did
it's job.It threw pieces of blades and drum everywhere, and broke the casing on the blower

I think this is the blade that hit first and basically exploded

This is a pic of the inside of the guard where it goes to the blower

Well,no one got hurt other than my wallet  and it appears these two could
care less

So for now the lumber goes back to storage, and I get new planer parts for
christmas.Maybe a ride is in store for this afternoon now

Happy trails

OUCH;

I agree things happen for a reason, so enjoy the nice weather.

You can plan those boards when you can't ride.

Dang!
I've ran metal through my planer. But it's a little 16" er. I can't imagine the sound of a blade that size coming apart! Glad you (and the dogs) are OK!

FORTUNATE

Good thing that you luckily did not get hurt. It could have turned out much differently. It can happen so incredibly quickly. Looks like those two ham bone hounds are doing an excellent job of performing their stealth watch dog act.

Sure coulda been worse. Some years back, my father lost about 3/4 inches off the tip of one thumb, to a planer accident! Good thing my uncle was with him, and rushed him to a clinic. Those things can bite hard!

Not to remind you of it or anything Mike, but what do you think it will cost you to fix? Looks like yours is a little bigger than the DeWalt I've looked at down at Home Depot!
