Best Skid Plate for 2022 KLR 650 abs

I been following the forums and I just purchased a 2022 KLR. I been ordering stuff of course but I not been able to decide what best skid plate for my use. I be doing basic camping trips and going off road with it. Going to do the TAT and then some BDR trips. I have some dirt bikes so I probably be pretty rough with my bike. Any recommendations?

I have the Enduro Engineering skid plate on my 22 adventure and have been happy with it. It is a chunky piece. I believe there are some that are wider coverage, but the EE plate is solid and holds up to abuse.
If you don’t have upper crash bars to worry about compatibility I’d order this right now if I were you.

Should be real close to $100 shipped.

B&B off road make Australian made bash plates for a decent price. Will get one myself once the plastic one cracks
Big fan of the Enduro Engineering skid plate on my 2022. Recommend.
I have the Enduro engineering plate. It appears very solid. But my bike is not an ABS. The OP specifically asked about the ABS model.

The version for the gen 3's will work on both models.

FYI - ABS has no involvement with skid plate fitment.

The Ricochet is the strongest but I like the Enduro Engineering the best personally, even it is overkill for most KLR riders. Can't go wrong with either.

Define strongest? Some are made out of Aircraft aluminium, some steel. Some checker plate.
Even seen some made out of old army ammo tins.
Most Australian mades ones are made from 4mm thick steel.

I also prefer the ricochet over the EE. There’s not much engine/side protection on the Enduro Engineering plate, and that drain plug area sits waaaay too low for some odd reason.

Having said this…anything is better than that friggin OEM tupperware dinner plate.

Do you know what skid plate would be good if I did have the upper crash bars on?

What brand bars?
The Happy Trails "Tougher than Hell" skid-late is double thickness aluminum on the bottom. It also weighs 7 lbs. But I doubt you could significantly bend it without totaling the bike in the process.

I like the Ricochet. Heavily built without the heavy weight. And it protects the water pump etc as well. Has spacers included for the rear bolts.

I went with the T-Rex Racing bash plate on my 2022 Adventure. I like the rearward extension, covering the rear links. Also, with E-Mike's low profile drain plug, nothing is exposed level with or below the plate. I also went with T-Rex upper crash bars, as they looked to provide better protection for the fog lamps than other makes, and they were compatible with the stock lower bars. Reasonably priced, too.

I run the SW-Motech skid plate. The model number from the Gen 2 bikes works for Gen 3. It is well made and bolts up to the stock mounts. Some folks report alignment issues when installing, and I did struggle a bit on my previous Gen 2 with that. On my Gen 3, where the front 2 bolts fit differently than on Gen 2 (captive nuts), I didn't have any alignment issues.

I think the Enduro Engineering skid plate is really nicely made and also uses stock mounts. I tried one before. However, it has a protrusion on the bottom where the drain bolt is accessed. The protrusion makes it hard to balance the bike on a scissor-style lift stand, which was a deal killer for me.

I wish someone would make a quality thick plastic skid plate for the KLR650. That is what I run on my dirt bikes, and they can take serious abuse if well made.
I'm prepping for a multi-month trip from Alaska to Mexico via Backcountry Discovery Routes. I haven't bought anything yet but will in the next 2 weeks. Here's the price/weight info I've collected so far. Is it worth the extra weight for some of this armor? Engine protection seems essential, but 34 pounds may be overkill. I'm still collecting observations and opinions.

I went with the Moose (Ricochet) for my '23. I like the added protection for the water pump and engine components.
