Bike Cutting Off After Downshift

275 Views 13 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Biggs3118
‘22 KLR base model, 4300 miles. VIN not effected by the fuel pump recall per the last time I checked.

Slowing down to turn or stop at a light, I usually downshift through the gears and blip the throttle as I do so. Bike has cut off completely 4-5 times I’ve the past couple of months. I believe it only occurs when I’ve downshifted, slowed and have the clutch in—I’ve caught it a couple of times (I can hear the LV pipe when it’s running) and given it some more throttle to save it from cutting off.

mad gar as I can remember, this has only occurred after installing the LV pip. Have snorkel removed as well, but still running OEM filter. Fueling issue? Anyone have any ideas?

I'd say don't blip the throttle. Fuel injection bikes don't appreciate the blip. That's more of a carburetor habit.

All new bikes with auto blip downshift are FI.
I don’t think that has anything to do with it.

Yeah I’ve rev-matched or blipped the throttle on every manual I’ve ever owned, and they’ve all been FI. This is definitely something different.
Are you also experiencing a popping sound upon letting off the throttle?

Yeah I’ve got a helluva lot of popping on decel. The more aggressive the engine braking (in the lower gears), the more popping. OEM pipe had a little popping, LV much more.

The bike is experiencing a lean condition. You'll want to get a tuner/programmer to adjust your air/fuel ratio. This is required when adding a free flowing exhaust along with intake mods.

Best wishes
Have you bypassed the clutch switch yet? You may want to try this first and see how you like it. These gen 3s have a abrupt fuel cut and the bypass improves the fueling. I forgot how bad it was until you mentioned this.

What's out there for the gen 3 bikes as far as tuning and programming goes right now?

Yeah, I bypassed the clutch switch the day I bought the bike. I mostly did it so that I could start the bike in gear. At the time, I hadn't read any of the forums on bypassing it for increased drivability.

This is an odd one then. I have the exact same mods with the exception of a Uni air filter and added jdjetting tuner. Prior to adding the tuner, I had no issues you describe. It seems something else may be the cause. Valves out of spec, exhaust leak, or something else? At 2000 miles, my valves were out of spec. I wish I knew your particular problem. I hope you figure it out soon.
I haven't checked valves or done any other maintenance except for oil, etc, probably should get to that sooner rather than later as I've beaten on it pretty hard off road.

How do you like the JD tuner? I'm hesitant to spend any more on this bike but am intrigued if it can add power?

@OCL Did a great review of the tuner. Might want to check it out.

I recommend the dynojet products but it's not the most user friendly. Once you learn it, it's great.

Best wishes
