I have found an ad for a 1984 KLR600 that isn't running (therefore it is CHEAP) Tha ad says it needs a CDI ignition box but otherwise is clean and low mileage (<10k) Any idea if this is a good deal or how I can tell if it needs a CDI Ignition box?

Paging Some Mook adn vatrader

txroller -

I'm not all that good with the electronics stuff, though I think Some Mook and/or vatrader may be able to help you out with a test procedure.

There does happen to be a klr600 CDI on e-bay right now for $125. There probably isn't anything special about a KLR600 CDI vs KLR650, and I note that the range of CDI prices for the KLR650 runs frrm $70 to $200, so the $125 price may be right n the ballpark. I don't know what years may have used the same module as the KLR600.

By the by, how much is 'cheap'?

I spoke to the owner who said "I tried a KLX250 CDI and it started but ran rough"

I saw the Ebay CDI boxes out there but started to think " do I want to buy a 25yr+ old part" doesn't sound to smart to me. So, I was wondering if a newer KLR650 box would work?
