Right now the only external power I have on the KLR is one of the connectors that came with my Slime inflator. It has a name, but I don't now what it is. I chose it because it's small and because the only thing I ever use with it is the Slime pump.

Does anybody know if those little battery charger/booster things you can plug into the cigarette lighters of cars and motorcycles work? They look like a little cube or stick with a cord and a lighter plug coming out of them.

Seems like they might be a good option for getting enough juice in a battery for at least one start and maybe more on a motorcycle.

If so, I might change my power source over to a lighter receptacle and carry one of those charging cube things.

I can't find anybody who's ever personally used one and don't know if they're ineffective or might be a bad idea.

Sort of related to your post, lemme comment on batteries, I am sure I was not the first to determine that the newer KLR's tend to ruin the cheap shiddy stock batteries they come with in a short time. Typically, you will find yourself with a bike that wont start, and further investigation yeilds that you have a cell or two in the batt. that is now DRY.

Consider switching to one of the glass-matt techy no spill no vent no fuss sealed alternatives, the infamous DEKA for the KLR.

The Deka has deep, powerful battery-balls.

And for 79$ with free shippin, it can't be beat.

No, do not be tempted to go to your local battery store and buy one that is "sort of like a Deka".

Just get a DEKA. Drop in fit, and the tops of the terminals are drilled and tapped for your connection bolts, meaning, "no little battery terminal nuts that drop and roll away".

planalp can of course speak for himself, but . . . I think he's referring to the little deck-of-cards-sized blocks, alleged to possess electrical energy capable of charging a depleted automobile battery so that an automobile can be started.

These devices plug into the lighter outlet found typically on the dashboards of automobiles.

I think planalp asks withether these devices would be useful in starting a KLR650 whose battery is depleted.

I've wondered the same thing, seeing the devices for sale at Target.

Given the small diameter of lighter wiring, I'd imagine some time would be required for the little black box to charge the battery, be it an automobile or a KLR650 battery. I can't visualize full starter current passing through the small-gauge wires; in fact, the fuse would not handle the amperage IMHO; that's why the conductor from the battery positive terminal to the KLR650's starter relay is DIRECT; unfused . . . and, rather large in diameter.

Anyone ever use one of these auxiliary battery packs? Auto or motorcycle?

Respectfully, spanner-weasel, I don't find any product disclosed from the link you provide having a thing to do with the one under discussion--i.e., an auxiliary battery capable of charging an automotive (or perhaps a motorcycle) battery through the lighter outlet:

I was not sure if the OP wanted to go SAE connnections from one vehicle to another, or was looking for component ideas. :t1204:

Other than a jump pack the size of a boombox, the smaller packs that resembled a stick of butter with cords coming out of them were mostly deemed a hoax, if you ever opened one up they had 8 AA batteries in them was all, hardly a "boost" for jump startin. The ones that used to be sold on TV were the ones I describe.

Interesting article. Thanks for posting it. Sounds like maybe some of 'em work and some don't. I think a car battery would be much more of a challenge for them than a KLR battery, though.

The CR article confirms, some time must pass before the dead battery is charged (not exactly a "jump-start" situation), and--as the article says,
Bottom line
If you want a portable model, the Black & Decker is the only one worth a try. But be sure to keep it charged. Your best bet is to buy a set of booster cables at least 12 feet long and between 4 and 6 gauge. They don't need maintenance, and as long as you have access to a second vehicle, they can be used to jump-start any car.
I made up a charging cable myself; plug for 12-volt receptacle on the depleted-battery bike, and alligator clips on the wires to attach to a "donor" battery, from another motorcycle or available hot-batteried auto, etc. Would take some time to charge, unlike the 4-6 gauge jumper cables, but--more compact than the heavier wire set.

As to the on-board charging battery, your alarm backup battery is as good and idea as the purpose-built BD product, and . . . an actual SPARE battery wouldn't take up much more cube and tare than either product.

A more optimum solution, IMHO--kick-starter, and ignition circuitry running independent of the electrical storage (battery) circuit (e.g., Generation I CDI).

Good point about an actual battery not taking up much more room than anything along these lines.

What about a scooter battery? I just picked up a scooter and the batteries on them are about half the size of a motorcycle battery: specs on one are 4.25" Wide, 3.25" Tall and 2.5" Deep. They're 12 volts and 4 amps. Maybe not capable of a "jump," but maybe a slow-charge to a motorcycle battery?

I carry a set of small jumper cables. Any thoughts on jumping a KLR with those from a car battery? I've never jumped a motorcycle from a car, but I understand that as long as you make it quick and don't actually START the car while doing so (i.e, car can either be shut off or running) it can be done with a minimum of risk.

But, the jumper cables are only good if there's another car or motorcycle around.

The idea of the scooter battery intrigues me, but don't know if it would provide the energy needed.
