Looks like i need to replace my clutch after 17K miles.
I am planning on replaceing all the friction and drive(?) plates as well as springs. Any suggestions as to brand i should use to replace? OEM looks like big$. I see EBC dirt racer kit mentioned many times....
Thanks....

EBC is a good choice. Make sure you give the clutch basket a good up and down and side to side to check the shaft bearing behind it, any kind of play and you'll need to replace it.

what the S???

So i ordered up a full EBC clutch kit with friction plates, steel plates and springs...

But it doe snot appear that there are enogh of each of the plates....I have yet to take apart the bike so i can not compare....but i thought that i saw there were like 7 friction plates and 8 steel OR 8 fric. and 7 steel. Does anyone know how many of each plate there should be? And if this could be different with after maraket parts? That would be wierd tho aye?

so i am bummed cuz there is only 6 and 7 plates in the kit.....after i was assured the kit would include EVERYTHING need to replace the ENTIRE clutch on a 1999 KLR 650

uggh...thanks....stig

You should be fine replacing just the friction plates. Is that what they sent you?

I see 8 friction plates on a stock clutch. Sometimes an aftermarket clutch pack will use thicker/fewer plates. Size 'em up and see if it will work before you get too bummed out.

Thanks.....they sent me friction and clutch(driven) plates and springs...

I agree I need to compare stack heights before I get too bummed out. But you know how it is...a guy gets bummed when he NEEDS to get the machine fixed.....If thats the case and the plates are thicker....wish they would add a footnote indicating that that is a possibility...

ill keep you posted if youre curious.

thanks again

Looks like another long drawn out process. After contacting the place I purchased them, they contacted their distributor and got some answers.

Final verdict...they sent me the wrong kit. Not enough plates of either type, as i suspected. Despite the fact the web page has them listed for the KLR.....it appears that they in fact can not get the EBC dirt racer clutch kit fhe KLR.
In fact it is not clear if EBC even makes a kit for the KLR.

So i am back waiting for OEM parts from dealer......bummer.:mad0235:
