Trying to reduce hand fatigue on longer Interstate trips. Which cruise control is best to use on our KLR's? Are there any to avoid?

Something about a small bungee cord seems to be the most popular. I don't know how it attaches or even works, but I thought it was clever.

I use one. I take a small, black bunjee. Wrap one end counterclockwise around the throttle grip, inboard. Attach the other end to the mirror bracket. Adjust as needed. What this does, when adjusted, is hold the throttle in position. When in traffic unhook the one end from the mirror bracket, when out on the open road again, rehook.

I got one, too, except mine's green. :wink: Works great! One of the best things about it is that you can still modulate the throttle and ride normally. Once you get on the slab you just relax your grip and it'll cruise you on down the road!

Thanks Rob and you are probably correct in your thoughts. For now the bungee will have to do. Soon I will be replacing my the stock handlebars with ProTapers, leftside light switch, mirror / choke addapter, new grips (again), and probably a cruise control. Is yours teh Universal or ?

Definitely in the manner of the KLR Spirit. Gotta love the simplicity and cost. Heck I have six cruise controls in my garage. :lol:

yeah,it's the universal. 25,000 miles and a few crashes and it still works. i've had this model on a coupla bikes now.

1200 miles on a dual carbed twin caused the first purchase.

I installed a Vista Cruise universal throttle lock on my KLR.

I filled the gap of the tab with JB Weld so that I could drill a mounting hole in it.

Here's a pic of the throttle lock with the tab extended with JB Weld-



Then I installed the lock over the throttle handle, lined it up with the lower cable cover, and started to drill into the lock. Then I removed the lock and finished drilling the hole. Then a quick touch up with the satin black paint-



Now I had to reinstall the lock so that I could drill the hole into the lower cable cover. I positioned the lock and started to drill through the lock's hole into the lower cable cover. After the lower cable cover was marked with the drill bit, I again removed the lock and the lower cable cover.

I then finished the hole in the lower cable cover (in a vise), tapped the hole for a 8/32 SS Button head allen screw, blew out the shavings, and reinstalled it.

Here it is installed, with new hole goodness (sorry it's fuzzy)-



I then reinstalled the lock and set to finding the correct length for the 3/8 long 8/32 screw that I bought. It was definitely a bit too long 'cause it was hitting the throttle cable bail. I also found that when installed with the screw, the lock was racking to the ouside of the bar. I used 2 peices of 3M double sided foam (Home Depot) to fill the gap between the lock's tab and the lower part of the cable case. After using the foam tape, the 3/8 long screw wasn't binding the bail, so I didn't have to shorten it.



I later found that I had drilled the mounting hole too high, so I filled that hole with JB Weld and drilled and tapped a new hole to mount the Vista Cruise. This put the thumb lever lower and allowed easier engagement/disengagement.

Well I thought I had a package of cruise control bungees but I can't find them. Gotta change that prescription. Tomorrow I need to buy a package of them little buggers. I probably won't get all the parts to change my handlebars until after Redding Tech & Adventure Days and I don't want to have to do it again.

Good post as usual Hondo. You always post thoroughly with excellent results. You are going to have to do something very special to impress again.

Is this the standard process to install Vista Cruise Universal?

This is the technique I learned at another site.

The Vista Cruise has a tab with a slot in it which can be used to hold it in place, but I wanted mine to have a mount with a hole in it for security.

After I installed it, I saw how another KLR owner had made a tab out of plastic that fit into the slot, but I still like the more secure way that I did.

The first Vista I installed was on a Honda Nighthawk that I had, and the tab (after trimming a bit) it between the throttle cables that are on the bottom of the the right grip.

Sure looks sweet. Have you ridden a bike with this CC? That would be nice. Maybe on a future wee-Strom or Concours 14.
thats my best friend bike. Greg in Burbank ca. the set up is awesome, he says it was really easy. I rides alot of freeway. it may not be a great set up if doing alot of off road.

CRUISE CONTROL

My 94 Kawasaki Voyager 1200 I just sold had factory cruise control on it. A pretty sweet sophisticated set up. This really was a nice toy for long trips. Only problem was it was only good up to 98 mph. Makes Western Kansas and western Nebraska disappear pretty quick at that rate.
