Looking into purchasing my first KLR650. The 3 I'm trying to decide between all have their perks and disadvantages. First is a black 2013 with 4k miles. final price is set at 5,182 after everything but the guys at the dealership are all assholes and refuse to cover the cost of labor to replace the front tire that has tire rot. 2nd is a 08 for 4500 after everything with 12k miles. has crash bars, saddle bag mounts, but is the blue/silver color which i hate. Finally there is a red 09 for 3700 final cost but has a whopping 24k miles on it already. Has a crap ton of upgrades (headlight cover, saddle bags, upgraded exhaust, foot pegs). Both the red and blue one are from a dealership that said they'd throw in any helmet I want (under $200) for free with purchase while the black one said they'd give me $20 off. I guess my main question with this post is How bad does mileage effect these bikes? I'd prefer not to deal with the first dealership but if I have too oh well i guess. Thoughts?

Mileage isn't an issue; these bikes routinely last for 100,000 miles or more.....but the model year is another matter:

early Gen2 bikes had a number of issues, mostly minor including the deep hole issue, wire harness rub through, disintegrating rubber bits and a poor ring design coupled with poor quality control on the cylinder bores which caused many 2008's and 2009's to burn excessive amounts of oil. As I said, most of the problems are minor and inexpensive to fix but the oil burning issue takes a 685 kit to fully address. If you buy the '08 or '09 expect to deal with some or all of these issues.

If it was me, I'd buy the '13 (well actually I'd buy a 2000 - 2007 'cause I prefer them for the offroad centric riding I do, but that's a different issue). ...and despite mileage not being an issue, low mileage is definitely better, all things being equal.

As a rule of thumb I use $0.08 per mile as a deprecation rate and 10% for the first mile going from "NEW to USED".

EDIT: I think my numbers are wrong. I have a 2008 with 100K miles and I don't think it has depreciated by $8,000 for miles and $600 for mile one. If so, I would have to pay you to take it.

The KLRs you mention seem reasonably valued for their mileage and accessories. I would stop worrying about the last dollar of value and think about having then all in your garage. If they were all there and you were going for a ride, which one would you throw a leg over? Buy that one!

i just bought mine 2 weeks ago, 2013 klr650, 5500 miles, like new, 1 owner, for $3400!.

craiglist. barely any tax and registration was $15!
u need to look around.

dont go to a dealer and pay stealership fees unless u want BRAND NEW cause u have OCD on how clean the bike should be.
