Gents,
Is there any mods you did but didn't like and go back?

Mine was the ATV seat cover. It looked badarse, but held water
WAY too well. Gave it to RiceInjected on a ride, then he sold his
KLR and bought a Shadow.

Also, the 17t was a bit too tall with the 140 rear tire and went back to the 16.

The ROX's came off after the ATV bars went on. Flippin' apehangers.

That's a great question. I've extensively modified both my KLR's (about $3500 each) and some thoughts;

- Happy trails PD bars - removed and replaced with an IMS tank

- Kawasaki Gel seat - never tried it; don't like how it's heavier than stock and I don't do long distance

- D606 Front tire; replaced with an MT21 which I prefer.

- I bought Idabiker's 32 watt LED headlight and never installed it because he came out with his 14 watt stock replacement that didn't require a fan, etc. so I went with those.


....other than that I don't recall any mods that I removed or didn't like though there are always new things and products so if I was building KLR #3. I'd make a couple changes;

- I'd go with a JNS skidplate over my Ricochet.....either is fine but I think the JNS is the best

- I'd also like to try JNS's new drop peg mounts which (along with decent pegs) might be better for what I do vs. the Knight Designs drop pegs I'm currently using (though they work great too)

...that's all I can come up with so with all those mods, I'm pretty happy with almost all of them.

Skid plate been hanging on the garage wall for a year now. Got tired of all the engine noise amplified by it. (Also don't ride the gnarly stuff anymore.)

Same here. Love-Hate relationship with the IMS. Just fixed a leak at the left wing plug. Have had other issues, mostly with the pump. Any more problems and it may get binned.

I do long distance; it sucked. Cooked the boys on hot days. Was as uncomfortable as the regular stock ass-hatchet. Made my own seat and it needs to be reworked with stiffer foam.

Me, too, on the JNS lowering brackets. I removed the Knight peg lowering brackets. I hit them a couple of times and got nervous about it. The PO had stripped the peg mounts, but did a good job of repair with Timeserts. Didn't want to push my luck.

Chain oiler. Homebrew and commercial. Too fiddly and messy, but convenient. Chain lasted forever.

Alarm. The magnetics screwed up my Spot and I never used it.

One of those cheap Chinese clock/voltage/temperature displays. I ride in the rain and it was constantly full of water. Replaced it with a reptile cage thermometer and I figure if the lights work there's voltage and I don't care what time it is anymore. I have a pretty good idea anyway.

Radio on an X-Mount with a BlueTooth dongle. Vibration screws up the radio and it thinks the batteries are dead and the display flashes after a while. Disconnect it and reset it and it's good for a while. Nice when it works (especially the Weather Channels), but now I just listen to the GPS or my iTouch.

Ricor Intiminators, front and rear. Untunable and the built-in magic and snake oil didn't fit my style of riding. Both ends packed up on washboard at anything over 20mph. Bleah. Back to Racetech Emulators and Cogent.

Mt-21s. Great hook-up, bbbbuuuuttttt Iiii couuuddddn't riiiidddde on pppppavvvvvemmmmennnnntttttt.

K270s. Decent hook up, but my seat was constantly soaked with pee when riding twisties. I still have a set of wheels with them mounted. I ride slowly to the dirt.

On the IMS; I have a Gen1 6.6 so no plugs or pumps. :)

Upon reflection, the previous owner of my 2001 had a couple farkles I removed

- scott oiler; makes a mess and if Wattman can get 30,000 miles on a stock chain using nothing more than WD40, that's good enough for me

- tool tube; the position guaranteed that I'd crush it on a log crossing. I carry my tools in my fanny pack, molle bags on the tank bag and/or a pack depending.

- K&N air filter; goodie; a filter that flows less than stock AND lets more dirt into the engine! where do I sign up? LOL.

You know that can't work, right? It's like Bumble Bees flying.

But, hey, it's like Pro Wrestling, which is real but a lot of people don't believe in. Just ask Andy Kaufman; he learned real quick.

I like to use a gear oil. I ride in a fair bit of rain and need to keep something good on the rollers.

Early clutch basket with lowered primary ratio. Coupled with a 14 tooth front sprocket, it turned the KLR into Ditch Witch. Even a 16 tooth front was too low for the freeway.

Using the KLR as a Ditch Witch is a hoot, though.

Next part for the pile of spare stuff:

As mentioned By brother Tom, I can't handle the 270 up front. After 200 miles
it still doesn't feel "planted" onroad. Scares me too in the curvies and anything
around 70 mph on up induces a wobble. (Great in the dirt, tho.)

(Bought myself a 55 dollar tire swing.)

My dumpster diving excursion last nite netted a thick aluminum skid plate
that only needs drilled to fit, some soft blue grips, and the replacement tire
for the front is a Dunlop D 409 full knob. I also grabbed a Dunlop Elite full
street just cuz it was in great shape. Luckily fronts are dime a dozen at the
recycling rack.

That is exactly how my Kenda K761 felt till I reversed the front tire. Mounted it correct and reversed a couple times to make sure... running it reversed feels great...

On the KLR 650 owners page on FB, I just posted that.
"Gonna flip it around before throwing it away."

Gotta try. It's a huge 3.25" with great tread. It would be nice
to use it safely for a season or two.
