I plan on vinyl wrapping some parts on my bike to protect the plastics. I have read some things and watched a lot of videos,but I noticed no one talks about how to handle those cut outs and screw holes on the plastics.

Do you just stretch it so it fits and sticks and then cut the hole out or is there some other method? Anyone ever use that clear vinyl to try and cover their bike but try and keep it looking stock?

You are riding a KLR not a BMW why worry about the plastic it does not cost enough.
I could see wrapping the fuel tank.
Most wrap is cut to size first. Then the surface and the wrap is soaked with solution. You then apply the wrap and squeegee out the bubbles.

I just dont like the color on the bike and wanted to experiment with vinyl. You're the first i've heard of dipping it in a solution. Is that the pro stuff the shops use? Are you saying i should cu the holes out first?

The solution is similar a light soap. When I wrapped my BMW WI with clear protective film it was provided. The film was already cut to size and my bike did not have any holes to be covered. When I was working there was a paint that could be applied and then wiped off with a chemical. It could be washed with soap without any problem.

On the BMW K1600 forum several people have used Plasticoat to change the color of their bikes. This can be pealed off when you get tired of the color and a new color can be applied.

Thanks, but I have some vinyl wrap leftover from a friend's project. Not gonna buy anything else. I wanted to cover the tank to protect it, upper front fairings to change the color, and I think I may be able to cover the rear fairings.

Since the color of the vinyl is so different from the fairings, i was worried the screw holes won't get covered completely and mess it all up. That's why I asked about how to apply the vinyl there. I think there is a vent cut in the plastic too.

Not a big deal, but thx for the reply.

How do you like the '14 klr? Have you ridden older ones? Is there a big difference in performance or anything?

The difference between the 2014 and the 2014 New Edition is in a better suspension and a better seat. I had a 2010 and the suspension was soft and the seat was hard. You may have a hard time around the holes and the vents. Try one panel first and then see if you like the results. What I was working with was a clear Mylar film to protect the paint from rock chips. The stuff scratched very easily and also marked. I have not installed it on my BMW K1600 Exclusive and will not.

The OP is limited in what he wants to do. I personally think that he will get a far better finished product by having the bike plastic coated. This is a removable paint type substance.

There are some videos on youtube that show the technique for vinyl wrap. Not all vinyls use a soap and water technique.
for some of the dimples around screw holes, if the vinyl wont stretch in them you could use plasti-cote product of a similar color to touch up.

Vinyl does give you many more options than paint, as well as protecting your original plastic a bit.

Sorry. I'm not seeing anything I like here.

Back to the OPs question,
I don't think vinyl wraps work well with a tight radius.
In the pic below, you can see they avoided the panel edges and the dimple in the side cover. The panels were probably painted gloss white and then the vinyl installed on top..
Also, anything stuck to a plastic IMS tank wont look good for very long. That vinyl on the tank will start to bubble in a few weeks.
