I had just added this to my Amazon cart when I noticed in the "other people have bought..." section that it comes in different lengths, apparently:
Is this the right length to get?
There's also this shorter one:
Anyone used either / know how to select?

Is there a better idea? I neither live nor work in a particularly crime-riddled area (I'd even feel comfortable leaving my car unlocked at either place), but I may find myself driving to places where I would feel more comfortable locking my bike. My buddy's old GXSR 750 had a lock (stock/factory) that locked the steering to one side, this bike doesn't appear to come with any sort of mechanism.

The steering does lock through the ignition switch. Move it all the way over to one side and then turn the key counterclockwise to the lock position.

I'm using a Motorcycle club when I travel. Fits the KLR perfectly. Amazon doesn't have it but a quick google brought up lord of places that do.

I'm of the opinion if someone wants to steal it it'll be gone regardless. A couple of big goons can easily just lift it into a truck and be gone in 30 seconds or less, sirens blaring if you have an alarm. Maybe a little longer if chained to a post.

I have theft insurance for that.

I'm partly with you - but thieves primarily target the low hanging fruit. Why run high-risk/high-effort when they could run low-risk/low-effort? They walk parking lots lifting door handles, for example.
If they spot a car that looks desirable, and they pull the doorhandle and an alarm gives the warning blips at them, that alone most often stops them - if they aren't specifically targeting that one car for some reason.
And if they have a reason, that's probably my fault for showing my hand. Stealth is the way to go.

My philosophy on security comes from:
a) not giving them a reason to target me, and
b) not being the low-hanging fruit.



I was interested in the disc lock because it seems small enough to pocket, is visible, and keeps the bike from rolling.

Anyone use one?
Of the two shown, which are the right size? Does it matter? (it must...)

I personally would go for the larger one just for the thought process that it is bigger and can be locked past the braking surface and not through the smaller holes.
If you can afford buy one that screams! As you have said.....if something makes noise it may be just enough to get them to move along. If not, buy two of the cheap ones and install one at each end IF you are that concerned. Then it's pick the entire bike up and not just the front wheel.
I run with one, but very rarely leave my bike where I can't see it. I'm strange that way. The theft ins. will only give me blue book value for it, not the thousands I have sunk into it. I would never claim anyway....my best theft tool would be a remote camera so I can hunt your ass down!

I'll look, I just spotted this one - sort of on accident while looking for other things for the bike - and it seemed cheap enough.

These bikes need a glove compartment. Assuming I get this, or something like this, I can immediately see a need for lockable storage for
a) this
b) sunglasses

SeaHorse makes some nice cases at reasonable prices. You can add locks to them.

I should think they would be very easy to bolt to even the stock rack.

I'll just say this about that. Anti-theft devices are like fishing lures.....they catch more fishermen than thieves. I buy insurance for a reason, peace of mind. I would, and have been, felt violated by theft. I didn't like it but I don't lie awake at night worrying about it either, life is too short for that. I'll turn the bars to the left, key it to "lock" and walk away. If blue book value is not enough to cover the loss then you need more insurance. Simple.

Besides, if this one gets ripped off I have the perfect excuse to offer Mrs. Flash for getting another.

The insurance thing is OK for when you are around home but if you were on a cross country trip having your bike stolen would be brutal. I like the idea of a good cable with a high quality lock. Lock the wheels together and a post. If you are traveling with someone, locking the bikes together works well too.

I took the lock out of my shopping cart - was supposed to have free shipping over $25 but still didn't even with $120 worth of Icon boots in my cart.
I'll think about it, I didn't realize there were so many lock options. I've got options locally also.
I still do like that the disc lock is very compact, and also can't be snipped with bolt cutters.

For the case, I was thinking of something a little smaller, sunglass sized, or sunglasses plus a lock while riding on shady days... maybe I'll see if there are any tank bags that lock.
