Yeah, it's a slow day in the neighborhood.

A while back I posted up this circuit...



...and thought I ought to try it out. Not that I've ever had an emergency on the side of the highway or anything....

I bought two of these switches which came from the Land of China. I mean really came from there, China Post and everything. I put longer wires in the connector of one of them.



Hooked it all up with a 552 flasher and tried it out.


It's right down by my knee, so I can have an emergency on a moment's notice.

Havaianas are standard foot wear around here, unless I can go barefoot.

I'm currently stylin' in Brazils ever since they discontinued Surfs.

With two major surgeries on my right foot (one self inflicted), my flip flopping days are done. :ashamed0005:

Good idea, even though after a couple of photos I wasn't sure if we were dealing with Tom Schmitz here or Swamp Man Shelby Stanga:



All kidding aside, a question:

Do these flashers work with the ignition off? Say, a broke-down dead bike with a battery that's still good?

I ask this question because I once was stranded at night on a narrow two-lane blacktop road with a shoulder that was about 6" wide. It took me about 20 minutes to figure out it was a pinched gas tank vent line but in the meantime I felt like a sitting duck on that road and was afraid to leave the ignition/lights on because I didn't want to run down my battery while I figured out what was going on. Since that time, I've carried a small, battery-operated flashing red tail light I cannibalized off my mountain bike. I figured a flashing red light on the back of the bike was better than nothing.

Damn. I thought I was done modding my KLR. Might have to seriously consider this one, too. Just out of curiosity, assuming a fully-charged battery, how long do you think one could flash the stock incandescent turn signals before the battery was significantly run down? I would think it would last quite awhile?

Aw geez, planalp, you didn't say there was going to be a test; crap, man.

Is it open book? Yeah?, OK, I gotta show my work, I suppose.

The 1156 turn signal bulb has an operating current of 2.1A. There are four of them, so the total draw is 8.4A.

The typical KLR battery is a 14Ahr unit.

The four bulbs should burn continuously for 14Ahr / 8.4A= 1.7hr.

The duty cycle appears to be 50%, so the theoretical burn time would be 1.7hr / .5 = 3.4hrs, at which time the battery would be dead and the bike would need to take the Ride of Shame.

Hey, didn't expect a full analysis, Tom, but I appreciate it because I had no idea. You people and that stuff they call "math." That would be long enough to keep them flashing while I tried to get it running or was waiting on the wife to come get me if I was unsuccessful.

I was reading some old threads on electrics and found this one funny,
Mark said suckupingly to the long time moderators.

I almost made a mental plan to do this but remember seeing quite
easily an m/c with a turn signal on roadside. One forward and one
rearwards will be fine in this case, but I also have a killswitch on the
headlite. This doubles our flash time again due to removing half of
the flashing units. (More math.)

Safer obviously is 4 and a good battery. 'Wings come with them, all
HD's, and I'm sure a boatload more. Not messing with this one, Mark
typed (now inflated ego) defiantly. LOL The batcycle stays at two.
