New to Klr old to bikes. I have a 1987 650 now. It has a steel tank that has brackets spot welded in top, what is that for? I searched and no luck.

What's that bracket look like on youyr '87 KLR (Gen-1)?

It may be that the previous owner had swapped out the original tank for a Gen-2 replacement:

The Gen-2 KLRs had different radiator shrouds and used small brackets to attach the plastics to the tank.

Here's a Gen-2 style:

No they are some metal brackets that stand off the tank at the top?
