I'm doing my homework on sprocket selections. I've searched the threads on this site and others like this one. Before I bite the bullet can those who know help out. I do ignore the replies that just say THAT ROCKS/SUCKS! that aren't backed with facts.

looking at GEARINGCOMMANDER.COM spread sheet I do have rpm's and speeds for selecting sprockets.

My goal is to lower vibes as to I'm a 90/10 street dirt rider and do min hwy ridding.

front sprocket knowledge
14t= dirt
15t = best commpromise D/P bike
16t =hwy lower engine rpms, drop an average of 400rpms

rear sprocket knowledge
same results as front just harder to do
1 tooth change on front = 3 or 4 teeth on rear

klr knowledge
its at best a compromise bike not good at hwy or MX

my klr is stock gearing 2007 15/43,stock engine with carb/air box mods and break and suspension up grades too. I have in my sweaty little hands a 16t and a 42t sproket and eagle mikes prev nut. I know I will give up some low end torque and more slipping of theclutch is nessesary.

What is this "16t too high, and will cause lower end damage". I've seen that on some forums with no good explanations. One does go into it a little, MULTISURFACE MOTORCYCLING.COM but not enough to satisfy me without hard facts or reasonable science behind it

Running a 16t on my 07. I do have exhuast and air box mods, but overall, I ride about 95/5 and the 16 does great. The theory of lower end damage is from lugging the engine in a lower RPM "essentially under about 2800 RPM's" with the 16t. All you have to do is keep your gearing selected to where your are in the 3k to 4k RPM range. There really is not the much more slipping of the clutch. As a matter of fact even with the 16t sprocket I am still able to pull the front end up as easily as I could with the 15t. It does help a "lil" bit with gas mileage. Think I might have gained back maybe two MPG. Yes that does add up, but is not a biggy. The vibes are better with the 16t once out on the big road cruising 65 indicated at about 4k. Speedo's all show faster than what you are actually doing. Usually between 3 to 6 MPH off at 60. I have not changed the rear sprocket because we do enough back roads here in KY, that have some steep climbs and I like having the torque where it is at now. If you are mainly almost all highway, then you might get away with dropping a tooth on the rear to gain a bit more drop in RPM, altho it will be negligable with only one tooth, maybe another 100 rpm. One must remember that it is what the rider can tolerate as far as how the bike pulls and feels with these mods done. Some like them, others would hate them. The front sprocket is cheap enough to give it a try and see if you like it or not. Go for it and let us know how you like it.

DX I did the mod everything you said is 100% correct

can easily run 80mph on the hwy ,did run it up to 90


@ 70mph indicated 5th gear = 4450 rpm

for city streets was cruising 1 gear higher at a lower rpm and able to drop a gear int the sweet spot of rpm's 3000-6000 for pulling ahead.

Filth, I'm going to when extra $$ allows. Stock rear sprocket.
If it lugs too much, back to the 16, which is very much nice on it's own.
It's my Cheap way of making a 6th gear as I do alotta highway.

I just got my A16 in September, and the previous owner had a 16 tooth front sprocket on it. The bike ran at 30mph in first gear at half throttle, and would run at 90 mph easily in fifth...which was scary as hell! I had a lot of trouble lugging the engine, being a newbie to this bike didn't help. I put the 15T sprocket back on, and my lugging issues all but disappeared, and I can still do 80 in fifth gear at a little over half throttle, which is still more than enough for me at this point.

I am running 16x42 with a 685 and it pulls well and is 1,000 RPMs below stock at freeway speeds.

So what I gather so far you went up a tooth on the front and down one on the back...from the stock 15/43? Where is a good place for sprocket shopping? I am tired of trying to hit that "6th" gear:(

I buy most of my parts from Eagle Mfg & Eng. Yes the same guy that makes the Good Doohickey. He also sells most anything. Mike is price competitive and ships quickly. One of these days his webpage will be available. Plus if you are in San Diego you always have a place to stop for a cold drink and meet a good person.

Note: the 42 was originally intended for a 15x42 combination but I destroyed my 43 and a chain so I added the 42 and a new chain and life is good. I think I am changing the sprockets for the D2D 2010 trip.

Engine damage.....let's hope not..... gonna be running a 16/35....yeah 35, no typo there, but my entire wheel tire diameter will be in the 19.5" range, instead of the OEM 26" area. Sould be interesting to see how she pulls...















Big engines in SCOOTERS, is the coming rage.....thought I'd throw a thumper at all the youngsters using 4 cylinders....LOL! Possibly 685'd and turbo'd before I get finished!
