I’ve been riding DS and adventure for 30 years. KLR, 1000 V Storm, 1290 Super Adeventurer, and now going back to KLR. DECIDING WHAT Gen I want.
‘thanks for add.

welcome. find a gen 1 simpler lighter faster. oh and cheaper too. that seems to matter alot around here, does for me.:LOL::LOL:
Lots of opinions on that! I started with a Gen2 (my son has it now), but now have 2 gen1's. If you really plan to do BDRs and other off-road rides, the Gen1 is a little better than the Gen2 because it has 1.5" to 2" longer travel suspension, and weighs about 20 lbs less. The Gen2 is better for highway because its fairing provides better wind coverage and suspension is tuned more for the road. Otherwise they are almost the same. Gen3 introduces fuel injection and ABS, and unfortunately, more weight. Think of the Gen1 as biased towards "dual purpose," the Gen2 as biased towards "ADV," and the Gen3 as more biased towards "ADV."

Thus, the answer depends more on what you plan to do. If you will do a significant portion of your riding off of pavement, you will want to spend more on better rear shock/spring and front fork springs and inserts no matter which Gen you choose.

Look for other threads about the differences between the generations. Lots of discussions about fuel injection vs. carbs, suspension changes, etc.

Been looking for another gen 1 KLR on Craigslist and there is one in Denver CO and one in Brookings OR that is in strike range for a purchase, really clean/nice and low miles... may start collecting them as the resale is going up whereas the gen2-3 resale plummets after purchase. Like said above a decision should be based on what you want to ride (on or off road).
