Hello everyone, I'm looking into getting a KLR. I already own a Ninja 250 & a Ninja 500 which I restored both of them.

I am active on several forums, and look forward to being a member of this one.

For now I'm looking for any information to help me pick one out.

Welcome ... eah, but I'm a noob here also.

You apparently are infected with MBD.

I would suggest that you don't get anything older than, ah, about 2003. I like the Gen I's from 2004 through 2007. If you get a Gen II, stay away from 2008 & 2009. That said, if the price is right, just get a KLR650. If the previous owner is knowledgeable then it is likely that the "bad" bikes (the years I said stay away from) have had their issues fixed and it's all good. Gen II's (2008 and up) have bigger front forks, better brakes front and rear & updated body work, revised instrument cluster, better headlights.

I think I might have found one. It's an 2002 model, that needs some TLC ( Tender Loving Care)

2002 odometer: 8300

I have a 2002 KLR 650 for sale with only 8,300 miles. It has an IMS gas tank and like new Dunlop D606 tires. It will need the carb cleaned and a new chain to run. The chain that is on it now broke, and is currently jammed between the the front sprocket and the swing arm. I just parked it when this happened and lost interest over time. The owner does have a replacement rear fender and front turn indicators.

He's asking $850.00 so my question is, is this a good deal, or should I keep looking?

At $850 I wouldn't hesitate. You can part it out for more. The tank alone is worth a few bucks. Pictures aren't the greatest. Check to make sure the chain didn't do any other damage when it came apart. Carb cleaning isn't a difficult job.

My thoughts exactly, I've rebuilt both of my current bikes, so it's not a down side for me, I enjoy going thru the entire bike especially on a used one, I hate surprises on the road, or trail.

The owner said he will send more pictures, probably tomorrow because of the holiday, which is perfectly understandable.

Is there anyway to tell which IMS tank size it is 6.6 or 10 gallons from the pictures?

Bummer. Welcome. I'm new here also. I looked for quite awhile. There were several KLRs within a couple hundred miles, mostly from around '00-'01 on up to almost new. I was looking for a gen 1, about three weeks ago I found an '07 with 5500 miles. It's always a pig in a poke to a degree, but I felt good about the seller, the bike rode nice, sounded good, ran good and looked good. He was the second owner, and knew a lot about the first owner.

So, I get it home and am finding little things that need to be addressed, nothing serious, just stuff like cables that have not seen any lube, maybe ever...an aluminum skid plate I had to slice the bolt heads to remove (rusty and frozen). I think the bike sat a lot in an unheated environment, and just wasn't cleaned up too often. But the air filter was doing its job, and he ran good oil, and I believed him when he said it didn't use any. It came with soft saddle bags, a tank bag, engine guard, three windshields, crash bars and fairly new Kendas. I paid $3100.00, plus about eighty bucks in fuel to go get it. Hopefully down the road a ways that will prove to be a good deal. It does need a doohicky, and I'm putting a thermobob on it, and will probably replace all the cables, or at least carry them.

I've bought several bikes over time and put more thought into this purchase than any of the others. For the life of me, I don't know why! Good luck.

Thanks, I am extreme patience, and will keep an eye out I'm in now rush to pick one up, or in desperate need of bike at the moment.

I'm wanting a first generation, just because price, and parts, but if a deal can be had for a second generation, I'm not going to pass it up.

I have always found the best time to buy is after Christmas, when the bills start rolling in, February or March.
