Power converters

I use a variety of power converters around the garage but these adjustable buck converters are really handy:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/15A-DC-DC-Buck-Adjustable-4-32V-12V-to-1-2-32V-5V-Converter-Step-Down-Module-dmi-/200984948419?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ecba2eec3

A buck converter works by applying a counter voltage to control the output. This is seamless for the user but limits them to lower output voltage than the input. I like these for jobs such as running a 6 volt bike from a 12 volt battery, or charging an odd voltage battery. They're also handly to combine with a larger or not smart charger to prevent the voltage from going too high and over charging your bike battery.

The little brass screws on the blue boxes allow adjustment of voltage and amps.

This one is the best thing I've bought in years:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/300W-0-15V-1-20A-Voltage-Current-Adjustable-Switch-Power-Supply-Charger-LED-U30-/380833574880?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58ab732fe0

I added a shunt type ammeter, voltmeter & jumper leads. The two little blue adjustable potentiometers were replaced by a pair of remote mounted panel potentiometers which are located with the meters in a box on top of the unit.

Now I can adjust voltage to the desired value and then leave the bike "running" with engine off to test lights, grip heaters and such. It's great not to have to keep playing with a battery charger to keep the voltage within limits when a smaller smart charger won't do the job. Also ideal for the 6 volt bike projects and charging batteries. Love the thing!

Digital thermometer

These things are handy for taking rough temperatures of various areas. The long sample tube and internal battery make them very portable. I have one mounted in the dash with the sample taken from the lower radiator tank crash bar. I'm often curious to know the air temperature, especially when crossing mountain passes.

USB inspection camera

I'm on my second one of these, having had one failure and then started working again. Handy, very handy.

It will go down spark plug hole, into the intake via the air box (I've removed the anti-flash back screen) and into the exhaust port. One can take photos or video which can be useful in reporting evaluations to someone by email.

These do require some practice to use effectively because one needs to insure that they know which way is up and also have some idea of what things look like in the area. It can be quite amazing how difficult it can be to work out, "What I am I looking at?"

I'd really like to be able to use one with my Galaxy phone or tablet....

Power Probe

The best electrical test tool going! I sold hundreds of these when had my tool business and use mine all the time.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Probe-3-PowerProbe-III-12-24V-Automotive-Circuit-Tester-with-Case-/231250094373?hash=item35d7946925&item=231250094373&pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&vxp=mtr

Clip the 20 foot lead by means of the jumper clips or use cigarette lighter adapter for known good ground and power. There's an additional 20" extension if required. The unit's tone indicates whether the tip is contaction power or ground and the volt meter shows voltage at the tip. The rocker switch forward applies power to the tip or back grounds the tip. The 10 amp circuit breaker avoids damage. The later models have a sliding lock function to lock the rocker switch.

The test probe tip has a standard banana meter plug to allow one to extend or use bed of nails, etc.

Ever been fooled by a voltage measurement? Just apply power or ground and see if the light works or becomes brighter....

US is down 1:2 to Portugal...bummer as I hate Renaldo so would have to cheer for the US even if they weren't my preferred team in this game.

it's 1 - 0 and the US is far outclassed in their division, i'd say they got lucky against Ghana and couldn't dream to compete with Portugal or Germany..... at this time.

thanks for the tool links :thumb:
