Good evening,

I just moved from Idaho to Columbus, Mississippi so if there is anyone in the area, "Hello."

So I've encountered an issue that almost left me stranded tonight and would like a little insight.

The past 2 or 3 times I went to start my bike, it would make a little buzz then go completely dead. No lights or anything. I turned the key off and on a few times and got it to come on again. After a few times of trying this, I finally got enough juice to crank. It acted completely normal the rest of the day. This afternoon I got the same thing. I ended up moving the handle bars around until I got power, and finally turn over. As I was riding home, the tachometer was jumping sporadically. The other day it jumped 1-2k, but tonight it was everywhere. I also encountered all the lights flickering almost to the point of going out. Occasionally the bike power would cut out. I managed to get it home.

Any suggestions for these symptoms? My guesses are either the battery is going bad, or a short or bad wire somewhere.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The 2008 model had a recall to re-route and add chafing protection to the wiring harness up under the tank on the right side near the regulator. If it chafes through it can cause the symptoms you're seeing.

Unfortunately, if you want to investigate that you will need to pull the tank and inspect the harness for possible chafing. If you see signs of chafing you'll have to split the harness, find the short, insulate it, and put it back together with the recall procedure. At this late date I'm not sure if a dealer will be much help, but it can't hurt to ask them.

This was my approach to the recall:

+ 1; the tachometer is sensitive to + 12 VDC voltage; power clearly is intermittently compromised. Could be a short or an open circuit, or a loose connection. Waggling the handlebars to establish connection points to a defective harness, as suggested above.

Checking and insulating the wiring harness as suggested is sound maintenance, with or without the symptom. Otherwise, checking and tightening all principal connections from the BATTERY TERMINALS, through frame grounds, etc., may slay the gremlin.

A multimeter and the wiring diagram from the following link may be helpful:

Start with the easy one first. Tighten your battery terminals. Mine did something similar last week and even though the wires to the battery felt secure when I tugged at them when I put a screwdriver on them they were barley snug (almost loose).

Yep. Any time a trouble report starts off with "it buzzed and then went dead - no light - nothing", the first thing to do is clean and tighten the battery connections.

So since I've never taken the bike apart yet and it was nice on Saturday, I figured I might as well get more familiar with it. I didn't notice any major kinks or cuts in the wiring harness. I took the battery to the auto store. They checked it, charged it, and called it good. I put it, the seat, and the tank back on and fired right up. I ran it around for about 20 minutes or so and no issues. I put it back together and the next day rode it most of the day. Again, no issues...so, for now, we'll chalk it up to low power/low voltage I guess.

I appreciate all the assistance.

Might have simply been a poor connection like Cabrito was saying, my GoldWing did the same thing once. Negative battery cable was loose. Cleaned and tightened and no more problems.
