Hello all. I am an experienced street bike rider and am curently looking to expand into the dual-sport market. I am looking at a 2007 klr 650a, and want to know wht you all think of that year and model. I am 6'6" 350 lbs and am not into "hard core" riding. I am into riding the fire roads and seeing the back country near Yosemite.
Any and all advice will be very welcome.

First of all welcome! I think one of the first things to think about might be ergonomics. You are a man with a great stature! I have a 29" inseam and wanted the bike a little closer to the ground-you might have the opposite issue. Curious, have you sat on one and how did the fit seem. My buddy is about your size and he says he couldn't see riding the KLR. he rides a Huskavarna..if you do go with the KLR you will want to upgrade the shock to a progressive 465 or something similar. Take some time and read some of the forum material specific to the "a" models. What other bikes do/have you owned? Where in CA? My brother lives in Whittier...

I think you might want to change the suspension out on it. I think that'd be about 500 (rear)+100 (front).

Your height is a good thing with the KLR - it is a tall bike. I'm 6-4 and it fits me like a glove.

The KLR is a good bike for your intentions - street, back roads, fire roads, trails ect. The KLR runs into problems on the heavier off road stuff...it is just too heavy to be easy to manage.

But before you do anything, I'd give the bike a whirl to assess your need for 600 dollars in suspension upgrades.


As for the klr's 'make' and 'model', there are two major ones. Generation 1 (1987-2007) and Generation 2 (2008-present). For the most part the differences between the two models is cosmetic.

I am not sure if you are aware, but the 'doohickey' is a part prone to failure, specifically on the generation 1 bikes. It can literally break, leaving metal fragments circulating around in your engine case. Its about 100-150 dollars to swap out with a quality aftermarket piece. It is possible the previous owner has already done it, so you may not need to worry.

Thanks all for welcome and advice it is much appreaceated. I am going on monday to look at the bike and see what I think. As for the "A" model thing, I cant find much. Is is a big differance between models?

This is the KLR 650 FAQ. If you do a google search for "klr faq," it is the first result, so it is easy to find.

The klr faq is a little old (last update late 2009). For the most part is focuses on generation 1 bikes (1987-2007). That said, the main reason I post this is to show you the different models. At the top there are the three different models. I'd say the vast majority are version 'a'.

Here is what the klr faq says about the different versions:

How do the models differ?
The A-model is the basis for the FAQ, and is further described herein. It was primarily available in the United States and Canada, through the 2007 model year. The B-model was only available in the US for the 1990 model year, but was available in the rest of the world for a number of years thereafter. The C-model is sold outside of the US and Canada, although the latter country has seen limited numbers of them. All three versions share the same engine. The B model is almost identical to the A model, except for the obvious difference in bodywork, the front brakes are better (dammit), and the suspension is an inch or so lower. The C-model has major differences, outlined here.

The KLR FAQ is a really good read, I read it twice before buying mine, once since buying it, and use it as a quick reference by searching (CTRL+F) through the text.
