Its that time of year when the weather welcomes motorcycling. Safe motorcycling requires proper gear with the helmet being the most important.

The outside of the helmet should be kept clean and polished unless you want that weathered look so you can impress you guys at the local watering hole.

The visor should be kept clean, scratch and crack free. I usually replace my visors once a year. I try to carry a clear and dark visor on every ride for obvious reasons and as a backup visor. The visor hardware should be checked and properly adjusted.

The vents should be kept clear and clean. Believe me they collect bugs, dead bugs. You can clean them with the interior removed.

The strap should be clean and fray free. Hopefully we never have to test the strength of the strap but a frayed strap is one you wouldn't want to test.

The interior of the helmet is probably abused more than any other part of the helmet. The interior collects sweat, dust, dirt, bugs, sneezes, and anything else you guys do while wearing your helmet.
Most liners and cheek pads can be removed and cleaned. Some companies say to put them in a washer on delicate and air dry or do as most do and clean them by hand and air dry. Most interior liners and cheek pads can be replaced with new parts.

The shell and vents should be rinsed and air dried while the interior is removed.

You will definitely appreciate feel and aroma of a clean helmet.

My helmet is no longer ofered for sale. Last year I bought new cheek pads. This year I wanted to buy new cheek pads and a new liner. I got the new liner but the cheek pads are no longer available.
If you have a favorite helmet do yourself a favor and buy the interior and spare parts before they are not available.
Currently looking for a couple new helmets since helmets can become too old.

Good advice, that stuff. Especially the part about buying extra pieces while you can.

I'm going to make it a point to get what extra pieces I can. Most helmets nowadays have removable liners for cleaning; why not have two?

NewEnough has some good deals on helmets right now if you're in the market. I agree, cleaning em every once in a while is cheap and worthwhile. Good call, Tim.

x2 on checking the visor mounts to make sure they are not coming loose.

I've been told that over time helmets can become brittle and lose some of their protective qualities so they should be replaced periodically.

I also used to hear that if you drop your helmet that it could be damaged inside and it should be replaced. Even a small drop off your seat. I know in years past mine would occasionally fall off the bike with a big thunk on the ground, but I was younger then and would just keep wearing it.

I always heard that, too, but some company (Arai) said that wasn't true. I still replace them every few years, but not drops anymore.

Can't find the link. Anbody? Think it might have been on Leno's garage?

I have heard that for years and it holds true if there is damage when the helmet is dropped.

The exterior shell of the helmet rarely shows damage but that is where I begin to check for damage as in cracking or dents.
Where you can find 99% of the damage is with the compressed foam. If you see speckles or small pieces of foam inside the helmet you most likely have a damaged helmet and should replace it.
Remove the interior pieces of the helmet and check for cracks in the inner (exposed) layer of the foam. If you see speckles or small pieces of foam inside the helmet you most likely have a damaged helmet and should replace it.
The better helmets have another layer of compressed foam, or whatever they call it, that is bonded to the outer shell. You probably won't be able to see this layer but you might be able to hear it. If your helmet does not sound solid when you thump it with your hand then that layer is probably cracked and the helmets needs to be replaced.

Cabrito is correct and all of the helmet components will degrade over time and should be replaced.

Now finding that helmet that fits like your favorite.

I have never broke a motorcycle helmet though have broken two bicycle helmets. The first was lost to someon stepping on it. The second was lost to a downhill crash returning from Point Reyes Lighthouse. The first hit sounded like a 'pop'. The second had almost know sound other than 'ouch'.

Oh both Giro helmets were covered under warranty. Not in motorcycling.

Tomatocity...would I be right in assuming by your sig line you have a Super Tenere on order? If so post it up in Other Bikes when you get it and tell us how awesome it is !!!

Ok, I like the modular helmets. However, I cannot find a 4x. Yes, I have a big head. My current helmet is a 3x and fits fine. I can easily find 1/2 and 3/4 helmets, but I actually prefer to protect my jaw.

flash...yes. good news: I have a Yamaha Super Tenere ordered. not so good news: Yamaha issued a letter letting everyone know the YST is being delayed due to suppliers. all YSTs will be delivered by 11/30/2011 though no date of when they will start. I wanted to take it on a month long June trip but... :(

Well then, Merry Christmas. That's brutal to have to wait that long......as my wife say's, "Good things come to those that wait".

Parallel twin, It's gonna' sound great.

Surprisingly not. Every month is another $1,000 toward accessories.

There is a carbon exhaust available @ $900 but it will have to be proved to me that there would be a significant performance gain without a loss in gas mileage.

I like the idea of having two seats that are both adjustable which makes four positions. The lower narrower seat is $239 retail. In two plus years there has been no complaints about the stock seat.

Now back to Helmet Care and a new helmet.
