Just bought a 2000 KLR650 and looking for advice. I am riding mostly street, 95% with 5% dirt road, to find fishing holes. I need to set up sprockets, and was thinking about 16 in front and leaving the stock (43 I think) in the rear. Does anyone have another opion. I will have about 50lbs of gear on the bike along with my 220lbs fat ass.

What is the suggested RPM for long highway trips. The 5K seems abit high for this newbee, trying to keep up with my Harley friends.

I have tried the 16 tooth front. It was great on long trips as it lowers your RPM's by about 500, but, in back country roads, steep climbs and just general around town use, it caused me to use more fuel and I lost that tractor torque that KLR's are famous for. With your weight and the amount you plan on carrying, I would stick to the stock gears. I average anywhere between 4500 and 5500 RPM's on the highway. I like 70 to 80 MPH runs. You will find anything much over 5000 RPM's will result in some oil usage, but I am fine with that as long as I know what is causing it. Oh welcome aboard and congrats on your purchase. I bought me a nice lil ultra light reel and rod I can put in my rear trunk for local stream fishing here. Love it. Keep us posted.

Maybe I will stay with the stock for now, just get a more street oriented tire. From the forum here, I am looking at the Avon Distanza (spelling?).

Anyway, thanks for the advice and have a good fishing season this year..........

Take a look at the Perilli Scorpion S/T also, about the same price. I had an Avon Gripster on the rear and got about 5000 miles on it, altho I had maybe another 1000 I could have used from it, but wanted to get the new one on for the summer. So far I love it. Great in rain, super grip, and does fine in gravel and dirt.
