I might as well be the first to do the "Tweety Bird Post" so here goes.

Hey guys, I know I have seen it talked about before but my bike was not doing it at the time and I did not really pay that much attention to the info. :oops: However, yesterday for whatever reason my bike got the "Tweety Bird Syndrome" really bad. :shock: Can you guys tell me how to fix it?

The cheap fix is to cut the inside pipe with a screwdriver, or something long and sharp. Stick the screwdriver inside the exhast , cutting it top bottom and sides. Sometimes either the top or bottom will cure it, and sometimes it takes cutting all four.

Or you can drill holes in the end of the exhaust pipe.


This isn't the best pic but you can see the holes I drilled in the end of the exhaust pipe.

Yep... slits in the perferated spark arrester 12,3,6,9o'clock will cure it.

I think it comes from carbon buildup, closing up the holes on the arrester that make the whistle sound.

My tweety started around 1500 km. It went away on its own around 3000 km, and hasn't been back since (currently at 10500 km)

Get a 11/4 inch hole saw and cut around the exiting exhaust outlet. Once this is done jam a tapered object inside the exhaust pipe and start wiggleing, twisting, cussin' and dancing and eventually the perforated tube will break off. This tube is only approx 6-7 inches long and is spot welded to a raised ring inside the OEM exhaust.

This tube is NOT the spark arrester. The spark arrester is further inside. Now that the tube is out and you have removed all of the spot welded pieces. (I sharpened a large screw driver and used it for a chisel) There is approx 3/8 inch of packing, the length of the tupe that can now be removed. I started the engine and blew it all over the floor.

Get a piece if 11/2 inch exaust pipe and cut one end at a slight angle so that it points down and out to the right side of your bike. (about 2 inches long) Angle cut against the muffler. Now weld the the pipe to your muffler.

This will relieve some back pressure and will create a deeper sound (Slighty, not like a Harley) I did mine and I'm happy as a clam. This whole proceedure can be done without removing the muffler from the bike. Just make sure when you tack weld the exhaust end on you cover the bike plastics and other areas with wet towels. This should also kill the tweety bird, dead.

I would enclose pix of how this is done but I'm too dumb to know how to do that.

I took a 3/8" bit that was a footlong. I inserted it in the pipe all the way to the end where it comes to a cone. Drill out the cone and problem solved. I have heard of people using a 1/2" bit too.

According to the cross section of the OEM muffler that "cone that you drilled through is the "Spark Arrester." Perhaps I'm wrong but I don't think so. And on the other hand it may not be needed.

Spark arrestor not needed! Roger you are the one that lives in the hills. I was in Redding this weekend and those hills are forest fire waiting to happen. Hopefully they get some rain soon.

You are probably right. If you don't go off road a spark arrester is not needed. But on the other hand, the COST of a fire that may be blamed on the lack of an arrester is mucho big time, plus the citation is also enormous. (If ya should get one)
