After thinking about it for about 2 years, I finally took the plunge and bought a 2001 KLR 650. It has 13k miles, and needs a little love, but mechanically it's sound and runs well. I had the pleasure of riding it home on Wednesday and put about 300 miles on it.

I'm actually surprised with how comfortable it is, and how much fun I had riding it. My other bike (for now, I'm trying to sell it to finance fixing up and upgrading the KLR) is a 2006 Ninja 650R. It's a much better streetbike, but I actually think I might enjoy riding the KLR better. It's a competely different mindset, much more laid back. I was happy with how the KLR felt cruising at Highway and Interstate speeds, although I might get a bigger front sprocket for my commute. It handled better than I expected as well.

My motorcyle history consists of: Early 80's Suzuki 2 stroke enduro (TL 185 maybe?),1982 XS650 (my first street bike), 1996 Yamaha Seca II, 2001 Triumph Sprint, 2006 Kawasaki Ninja 650R, and now a 2001 KLR 650. I'd estimate I've put about 80k + miles in total on those bikes.

I'm very much looking forward to getting to know and enjoy my KLR. I have a new front tire on order, and will be doing the "doo" mod soon, as well as a few others. I really can't wait to start exploring all those trails I looked at as I rode by on the Ninja :35a:

I heard about this forum from a poster who also posts on Sport-touring.net, Dantesdame. Much thanks to her for answering all my questions about the KLR, it was very helpful!

Glad to be on the forum, and looking forward to getting to e-know you!

I can't think of a better bike for Colorado. I'm excited to check out more of the state that I haven't seen before :D

When I rode a motorcycle across the States in '83 Colorado was the state I spent the most time in. What a beautiful state! I think you are really going to enjoy your KLR living there with so much exploring to do.

All right!

On order I have my hand guards, my doohickey kit, a 14T and 16T front sprocket, new front tire, air filter, and thermostat. I'll be ordering my Oxford heated grips as well shortly.

Can't wait to get it all set up for me!
