I am riding from La Quinta Ca to Calgary Alberta starting Wednesday. Has anyone tried the 395 up the eastern side of California? I know it is cooler than the centrall area and my reason for going east is to avoid the Interstate and major roads that all tend to funnel into Sacramento.

Any recommentations are most apprec

I've done 395 many times.

In one way, it's super slab and duhhhhhh. The scenery is tops, though.

Now, if you're not in a hurry, try this.

Git yerself on the 247 and go to the 15, then the 127 to 190 through Death Valley and on to Lone Pine.

Oh, yeah.

Take 395 to Bishop. Catch the 6 north out of Bishop and ride up to
Benton. Turn left and take the 120 over to the 395.

OMG.

Take the 395 through Lee Vining and up to Bridgeport, then on to the 89 up the west side of Lake Tahoe.

Booyah!

Stay on the 89 until you hit the 44 over to Redding.

Sumbitch!

Once in Redding you can shoot up the 5 or absolutely lose yourself on all sorts of absolutely fan-fricken-tastic roads up into Oregon.

newcomer21,

Here is what GoogleMaps shows...

...but throw in as many of the side trips Tom mentioned. There are many side trips you can add but a lot depends on how much time you have.
Enterprise OR to Clarkston WA and Lewiston ID to Missoula MT (Lolo Pass Hwy 12) are listed in the top 15 rides in the USA.
Riding through Glacier National Park in MT and Canada would be something you won't forget.

I love 395 though I am sure it can get boring. The Topaz Chevron and Lodge (Gardnerville NV) is a clean and friendly place to get gas and take a break.

I am leaving for NorCal Tech Daze 2011, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, SD, ND, on June 3rd and will be riding some of these roads.

There is so much you can do with this trip. Don't miss Glacier National Park.
