Hi guys I'm new to the forum, so this may have been covered but I was wondering about safe highway rpms for longer trips, my 07 has a one tooth smaller front sprocket so it's revs a little higher but at 65-75 I'm between 5-6kish, usely just short trips but would it be ok for longer trips like 1-2 hours

Do you need the 14 tooth for your type of use?? I'd bump it up to at least the stock 15 or even better the 16.

It's nice for the enduro events I go to, I don't go on the high way unless I have to, was just wondering if I would do a longer trip how it would do if I keep it around 5-5500ish, the bike only has 3k on it

A variety of opinions exists on the subject; my own: "Don't worry, be happy," with whatever rpm you run up to redline.

Keep an eye on the oil level; otherwise--in my view, an overhead camshaft four-valve single-cylinder engine shouldn't fear rpm.

As mentioned, YMMV!

RPM's

2011 KLR 650
I run stock gearing. I can do about 65 mph and keep it at or below 5,000 rpm. I don't see any oil usage if I do that.

When I first got the bike, (at 1,000 miles and up) I did some runs on highway where I was running around 6,000 rpm for at least an hour at a time. I did notice some oil usage there.

I do try to keep my rev's below 5,000 rpm. I have just over 15,000 miles on bike now, and try to change my oil & filter around 3,000 miles. The last oil change was at 3,500 miles, and it was about 1/4 down on the site glass. :kumbaya: (All's-Good)

As stated above, it'll do it, but it won't like it.....is the best way to explain it imho.....will it blow, no it won't, will it maybe burn more oil doindd, I would say so, is this acceptable to you or your bike, that is your decission to make....I'm in the 5500 and below crowd.....it's a single thumper which like mid to low RPMs imho.....I blew mine last time i rode her way way too hard by over reving her, crank bearings went. On a stock engine yes it'll take 6,000 I would imagine all day, but it also won't last the same time span life wise if you keep doing this to it.....as i always say, it's your bike and your wallet when making these decissions on how you treat you bike etc.
I also understand the need to keep the 14 tooth front....that is unless you wish to change it for the highway and change it back for the event so to speak, which is the best way to deal with your issue.....but that is time wasted, better to drop speed down a bit and keep the RPMs down to where they are happy.:character00201:

The previous owner of my '09 KLR swapped to a larger front sprocket, I think 15-tooth. Cruises at 60 mph at about 3900 rpm, 65 mph at about 4200 rpm and 70 at about 4500 rpm.

You must have 16t. My 15t is close to 4.5 at 60

I've done a few 5k rpm+ runs and haven't used any oil.

Could be... I've only had the bike a week and haven't dug in there to count the teeth.

In April of 1988 I rode my 3000 miles 'Broken-in' 1987 KLR650 across Nevada Twice at 5800-6200 RPM.
(I went to Laguna Seca) Left Lander, WY at 5pm Friday. Was back to work 10am Tuesday. It had the largest fuel tank!

Yes, it used some oil! I expected that it would/should! Ride On.
And check your oil level every chance that you have, takes 5 seconds! Add oil as needed! Ride On.

I run hard and long periods when traveling.

(Get there first n' slow down to start looking for dirt roads.)

There's a few opinions here but all are similar.
Sustained high rpm use of any piston engine is "bad", so to speak over the long term.
I run interstates at 5,000+ rpms but punch above 6k here and there.
Mine is also an '09. Another point: The 15 tooth is stock. The
previous owner put on a dirt gear it seems. 15-16 tooth for extended street riding
is a good ballpark, and put on a 14 or 15 when the offroad fun is about to begin after
ya get there. One nut and the cover screws. It's a fast switch and don't forget to
take up or let out proper in-spec chain slack at the axle.

150kph at just under 8000rpm which is redline. Does that imply stock gearing? Burnt a lot of oil on a 250km ride NOT bothering to ride below a mind numbingly low and boring 5000 rpm. Will have to do something. This is unacceptable. Didn't budget for a 685 kit but what choice is there?

I ended up putting a 16 on love it, and I'll keep the 14 for the dirt,and cheapbass I put the 14 on no previous owner had the bike since new, and I know about bearing and ring wear with higher rpms I build Sprint car engines for a living haha just was wonder how these big singles hold up never road it much till now always took my busa every where but sold that and now this little guys is my run around bike

8000rpm is 500 Above Redline and about 1500-1000rpm above peak power. I have accidently seen about 8750 once. It still runs.

As to "Burnt a lot of oil", may I suggest that you review some of my modifications, Especially #7. :)

How old/young are you? Did you ever build any Chrysler/Dodge 318/340 CID engines?
318 CID V8, 3.91"(99.31mm) bore X 3.31"(84mm) stroke.

Does anyone Know "how high" they used to twist the built-up 340 engines in like the 340 Super Bee??? Sorry, I don't. I've always been a biker.
I wonder what their oil consumption rate was at Redline minus 500-1500rpm??????

I'm 29, built plenty of mopar small block, I have a 70 duster with a built 340, and I run it to 8500 all the time at the track with h-beam rods pdwestmen

Do you have any records of oil consumption per Hundred miles under race conditions?

To many factors play in to engines oil consumption mainly on how the motors was built type of rings, compression, engine hours, oil weight and type, etc., but I miss how this is relevant to this forum haha

You just 'dove into the Deep End'.
We ride 'basically one 1/8th of a 318 Mopar engine'!
I hope you are ready for a barrage of questions, from myself and others.
