Well, after having recovered from a touch of pneumonia, I decided to take off work a few hours early the other day. It was sunny, rather warm at about 60, so off I go from work at noon. Now I have a 52 mile commute to work, all slab driving. So here I am a little less than halfway home, sun roofs open on the little diesel vw, tunes are way to loud and I'm not paying as close attention to the road as I probably should. Out of the corner of my eye I see this chunk of "stuff" in the road, I move to the right trying to straddle it with the tires. No luck, it missed the front tires, but I heard and felt this nasty whack in the back, then that tell tale whup whup whup of a tire givng up the ghost at high speed. Wouldn't ya know it, the shoulder was so narrow I had to stand on the other side of the guard rail to change the tire. The spare, from what I can tell had never been out of the trunk, the tools were all shiny and new, no rust, not to bad for a 1986 VW golf diesel with almost 250k on the clock. Well, the monkey that put the tire on at the shop must have used a cheater bar to put the studs in, because the lug wrench wouldn't do it. I had to call one of the guys at work to bring the electric impact wrench to get the studs out. Get the tire changed, head to sam's club for a new set of winter snow tires and they were just swamped, long story a bit shorter, I never made it home until almost 5pm. Suns down, the weather turned to crap and started to rain, moral of this story, sometimes it just doesn't pay to take off work early. I really can't wait until my road trip in may !
