Hi,

I am planning a SFO to Terra del Fuego trip this year. Gearing up the KLR650 are in the process now (hats off to MB4) One thing comes to mind, how to carry the plastic fuel tank with extra fuel on the bike.



I prefer to keep it outside the panniers for safety concern. Anyone of you with pass experience will help me decide.

Well, here's one way:



Active ingredients include:

* Cycleracks http://www.cycleracks.com rack

* Chcleracks pannier set (with plate for container bracket mount)

* Kolpin container bracket

* Container (discontinued "Pioneer," a brand purchased by Kolpin, shown. Don't know if the newer, wider containers fit

The container fits inside the left saddlebag, can be filled at the pump without dismounting from bracket.







More-or-less road march configuration; saddle bags and top case included in pannier set, container fits as shown.



If you could do without a right saddle bag, with an additional bracket, another container could be mounted on the right side. Why no right saddle bag for the extra container? Inside the saddle bag, exhaust is too hot, container must be mounted outboard on right side.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am using the Happy Trail SU rack with Cascade panniers, will the mounting hardware fit on that rack?

The trick will be mounting this bracket and the container inboard of your left case; 1) Enough room, 2) Enough purchase for the bracket.





The Kolpin brackets are quite versatile, lots of mounting options; "custom" holes can be drilled for mounting bolts if necessary.

Space, and a sufficiently thin fuel container (the Pioneer jugs were thinner than successor Kolpin containers; don't know if they have any old-style around the plant or not) are essential. The Cyclerack rig works fine, as shown.

Just thought I'd mention, IMS has a new 10-gallon KLR tank on the market; has internal vacuum lift pump, and I don't know what-all.

Kinda expensive, but . . . if extra fuel's a real concern, $ 500-or-so for a tank's an inconsequential expense for such an ambitious journey, IMHO; YMMV!

Finally, you've about 6 gallons, OEM. No idea of how few and far between fuel supplies might be on your journey. Might check with those who've "been there, done that!"

Just thought I'd mention, IMS has a new 10-gallon KLR tank on the market; has internal electric lift pump, and I don't know what-all.

Kinda expensive, but . . . if extra fuel's a real concern, $ 500-or-so for a tank's an inconsequential expense for such an ambitious journey, IMHO; YMMV!
To correct the above post - The IMS tank has a Vacuum operated lift pump - the kit comes with extra hose to splice it into the vac line on the carb.

I have about 2000 miles on the new IMS tank and couldn’t be happier. It operates flawlessly. I can run over 300 miles before hitting the reserve which has around another 2 gallons.

I dropped the bike pretty hard last week trying a steep sandy hill climb and only had some minor scratches. I was surprised that for how much sliding the bike did on the tank there were only minor scratches.

Thank you LoneRider for all the info. I think the 1.5 Gal. fuel tank will be my choice as I can't afford to invest too much on a one way bike. As you said, I'll need to find out how to keep it on the bike. Yes, I am on HUBB.:35a:

I understand that for most the IMS is an expensive option. The choice was easy for me - this last winter i dropped the bike (seems to be a theme with my riding - probably time for a true dirt bike)and cracked the stock metal tank, broke the side fairing in half, and cracked the upper fairing. Replacing the stock parts offset the purchase of the IMS tank - happy with the decision so far.

I stand corrected, bricaud!

I was introduced to the vacuum lift pump from earlier reading; don't know why I typed "electric" instead, except . . . senility is CRUEL!

I just carry 2 liters. MSR fuel bottles. Put in tool tube which is attached to pannier racks so they are inboard of my hard cases.

Is your IMS tank the 10 gallon size? If you only get 300 miles on 8 gallons of gas, that is not very good. (10 - 8 = 2) 2 gallon reserve?
or is your IMS tank smaller?

I carry a liter MSR fuel bottle in one of these "tool" tubes




the other has oil

Kriega have an ADV platform which can accommodate Rotopax containers on the pannier platforms. Another idea might be to install a couple of Rotopax flat across the rear upper luggage rack, and strap a bag over them if need be. :)
