I have been toying with the idea of opening a DS bike shop, but instead of selling just the basic KLR, I would add the bells and whistles including racks, aluminum panniers, upgraded doo hickey, front fork brace, etc. It would probably bring the price closer to a entry BMW FS 650(without any extras)...

Would you buy something like that or would you prefer to farkle it yourself?

Just looking for an indicator...

Heck I dont know but it would not be something I see working? I see it this way. If I had a bunch of cash to spend on other stuff I would have upgraded the bike. As I am a tighwad I got the KLR. The other part of the KLR is doing the stuff yourself I think. Like joining a forum and finding mods and posting updates about them. Do your thing, I hope it works out.

I just bought a clean well cared for 2001,I spent a lot of time searching for a good dual sport and as of now the KLR seems good bang for the buck,and I got mine for less than 3000$.a friend spent big money on a new 650 Beemer,its nice but I think even a new KLR is still a better deal,just access to dealers and parts alone is enough to keep me off the Beemer train unless you get into the big 1200 BMWs I am not convinced that the 650 BMW is worth the tag.

Thanks for you input...just seeing what the community thinks...many of us are tightwads but also there are those who cannot farkle their bikes but would rather have someone take care of it...

My daughter sat on the fs650 and liked it but I could get two KLRs for that one...

I, too, am a tightwad. Plus, I enjoy doing my own work.
Good luck to you if you try, but guys like me will likely hold on to their cash and do their own thing. But as they say, opinions vary.

While I can't regularly afford for someone else to do those kinds of things for me, I can see where there could be a market for such a business. If I were you, I wouldn't restrict my customer base to Dual Sport owners only though. Offer services for as many kinds of bikes you can in order to make the most profit.

agreed,, thats too , why i don't like ktm... cost is too much ,parts very hard to find,,no dealers around me,,,and etc,etc ..

yes ,,i want ,,differant add-ons,,, as have two gen1 klr both bought at/or under $2500 with 5000 on one an whopping 7000miles on other..

so have put ,full exhaust on both ,one lowered street tires , smaller rim, stripped down =moto-ed.. other full boxes, knobbies =touring set up...

first : i would like too see a company ,,,make these options = two very differant styles of bike ,,out of same base model.(as klx is now sold,,in a street or off-road model,,shocks,tire, and gearing all differant).??..??..

yes would like too see happen to klr,,,even just for extra parts that you could buy-an-swap, back-an-forth...

but to pay - $8500 for a klr,,,figure= shock upgrade (front/rear) $800+ guards/racks/panniers $1000+ tire upgrade $200+ some engine work(doo-.22mod,add electric plug-in ,etc) $200+ labor/shop cost $800.....

ah ya it better have all the bells and whisles....as i figure it would be a extra $3000...that is not bad,,cause just abs brake upgrade on bmw is est $1000 bucks for a- stock option !!!!!

so big thing ,,how much would price rise,,,,what would be on the bikes= = could you make it worth it..

as for me,,better to add parts ,when i need/or just when money is there,,,as i didn't go buy some brand new bike off show room floor(yes it is nice to be able to do that)...

but because there are plenty of barely used klrs out there== is like a car ,,, ,quarter or more, of value is lost when , owner drives that new car off the lot....even if where to sell next day,you would lose money....

so i wait and look for the persons/bikes like this...an add/change bike how i want..

with all that said ,,,there are some that (i think) would like that option,,they pick out parts,,you install ,and is already for them=no work involed,,pay-n-go!!!!

Thanks for the excellent comments...much appreciated...

The thing is to build clients over time that come back for service...the reality is most people will even take their vehicle to a mechanic to get an oil change these days because they do not have the time and would prefer to have someone do it for them. I have a few cruiser friends (yes I stand out on a KLR in those crowds) but none of them do any maintenance themselves, the bike goes back to the shop for everything....

Not looking to make a fortune but instead make a good living helping others and feeding my farkle habit...
