A lil'heads up on oil changes.
First: I was stoopid and messed up!

Did the doo a week or week and a half ago and you guys and the
Youtube link were wonderful at walking me thru it. Figured I could
handle the dumb part, the oil.

I had the bike leaned to the right and my drip tray ended up filling up.
In this case a pie plate. At that point I decided to do an oil change
also. Tilted the bike level, then towards me a bit and got out all the
oil. Swished the filter around in a coffee can of gas since it was a
short interval since the last change. The pie tin filled three times. I
figured wrongly that it held about a quart.

What I didn't think of almost cost some real damage. I never used the drain
plug and WAY overfilled the case. Motoring along today she souded great
but at a traffic lite a horribly loud ticking sound came from below.
Upon pulling over the PCV mod was clacking super loud AND at the doo
location. Babied it home and checked the oil window, and it was full.
All the way. Drained a quart and then could only see light at the top of
the window on the kickstand. Drained a half quart and it came into spec
right on the upper mark with the scooter level. I was a quart and a half
overfull !!

Sounds perfect now and runs the same. God only knows what's gone
wrong in there over the last 152 miles. Some type of damage hadda be
done or the noise wouldn't have shown up.

Whether using the drain plug isn't even the main issue. The simple fact
that I didn't idle it a couple of minutes and then check the window is.

If I'm understanding this right you "changed" the oil when doing the Doo but just leaned the bike over to the doo side and let it run out of the case??

You won't get all the oil out that way. Most of it is still below. Only way, as you know, is to pull the plug.

I'm not a big fan of washing oil filters. For $3 you get a new one, despite your user name. I would have just left it alone if it was a short interval.

But a lesson learned and hopefully there is no damage.

Wow, I'm amazed there wasn't a cloud of oil smoke behind you! Usually when you overfill an engine (like say a lawn mower, nah, did I ever do that!?!), it'll be hard to start because of the oil drag on the crank. Well maybe with electric start you won't notice but then usually there is so much oil splashed up on the cylinders that the oil ring can't wipe it all down, and then you get smoke, big time. You probably filled the head with oil but that would only blow out the PCV or run down the valve guides. If you haven't blown a crank seal, you're probably OK IMHO.

TheKLR650 engine drains more oil when the engine is level, oil filter removed, drain plug removed, and leaned to the riders left. There are ways to drain a few pockets though probably isn't worth the time.

I refill the oil using 2.5 quarts and a new filter. This allows me to get two oil changes from five quarts.

Crush washers are inexpensive, use them.

Use a magnetic drain plug.

Torque the drain plug to 16.5 foot pounds but check your manual for proper torque.

Your bike is ruined... good going.. it's not worth $100... but since your feeling like a loser newb rookie... I'll give you $200 just to help you feel better about yourself, thinking you got over on me..

On a serious note thought, what really could have gone wrong. My experience (not personally) has been blown crankcase seals, at least on two stroke bikes.

John (but then this bike does have a bearing crank, seems like it's bottom end doesn't know if it's a 4 stroke or a 2 stroke, but then I had girlfriends like that,...ignore that last remark)

I drilled a hole in the wrong place on my air box and I feel like a real dolt.

The fish I caught last summer was only about a foot long.

I'm a worthless puke.

If you give me just $50 I'd feel a lot better though. I can take PayPal.

Ouch that hurt.

I knew there'd be some poo flung on me and decided to post it anyhoo.

Yes, I use new filters. But with only a few hundred miles on one it wasn't
ready fer da landfill yet. I'm not THAT Cheap. LOL

There's Cheap, stoopid, and frugal. I try to safely combine all of those aspects
into a happy life.

No drippage so the seals aren't pleased for not getting blown. I know how
much I enjoy the sensation, but the seals halfta wait.

OBJ, love ya for the generous offer! The warranty has a month left on it.
If the engine craps out, I'm removing the doo and blaming it on faulty manufacturing
or assembly and will raise hell until Kaw fixes my mistake.

Seriously, love ya guys. I can take the heat or never woulda posted this.
PAY ATTENTION to every step you take then double check it. I'm riding to work now.

Actually I really love the frugal nature of the KLR in general, heck I can't fix or upgrade anything on the Vrod for less than $100, thus the HD = Hundred Dollar Store. I've seen KLR's all over a lot of the world and that's why I'd always wanted one! Heck, last time I was in Thailand, I could have rented a CBR600RR or a KLR for the same price and as I had just sold my CBR (due to the nasty divorce dollars involved) I took a KLR for a spin. Hadn't thought about it, but I bet when I saw the KLR Craigslist bit I bought it because of the spin in Thailand, fancy that! Now I'm talking like a Geico Lizard!

That annoying front wheel lift is still there when I goose it in first. Shwing!
A 43 year old doing wheelies....still........grow up, Mark....nah.

Got a weep under the outer chaincase cover. Probably didn't clean the gasket
surface good enuff while doing the doo. (Personality trait.) Leaving it that way.

It wheelies and leaks. NOW it's a KLR!

I am guessing you are referring to the left side of the engine. Doesn't matter which side...loosen the bolts and re-torque them. Worked for me.

If you leave the oil leak you are guaranteed a parking spot next to Harley's.

Almost four years and 27,000 or 685 and 705 and I have never lifted the front wheel during acceleration. Only did it once with my V-Strom though was not trying to.

I twitch the clutch when nailing it in first. Only rarely will it lift more than a few inches otherwise.
Gotta give it a nudge skywards.

Consider upgrading the clutch springs. It is inexpensive and simple. I did not have any problems with the increased clutch lever tension.

Oil leaks rearely get better. After the 705 and clutch spring upgrade the right side had some seepage. I took a chance and loosened the bolts and re-torqued them. Seepage gone. :) Then the crankshaft bearing went bad. :ashamed0001:

Oil Level?

Not sure if this has been covered.

When checking the oil, I always find a level spot, however is the line in the window designed to tell you the oil level while leaning on the stand or should I pull it up to a level position?

You need to have the bike vertical to check the oil window. It should come just to the top of the window...a little space, but the window should be fairly full. I don't know why, but if you put the correct amount of oil in, that's where it ends up, not between the lines.

Ok, while standing on the window side, I always pull the bike towards me and try to get the bike as vertical as possible. I guess this is good to do.

I was never sure if the window was designed to be viewed while leaning on the stand or more verticle.

Today was tinker n' ride day. No more weep after the ride. Loosened and retorqued
each one a turn at a time once they were snug. Opposite by opposite of course.

Consider this. Oil expands in size when it is hot so this increses the level. Always good to check the oil when it is cold.

To find the correct lil level. Change the oil and filter. start it up and shut it off. Tis will fill the oil filter. Check your oil level. That is the correct oil level for your KLR.

If the oil window is completely full...tilt the KLR to the riders left to see when the oil level appears.

Not everyone uses the same amount of oil when they chnage oil and filter.
