Sorry, couldn’t resist. (Lol). I’ve owed many mcs over the yrs. my next will be a KLR650, sometime in the near future. I still have a case of full syn 15-40 Agip I Ride -Jaso rated oil. I plan on using that. (Roast if needed). I do understand about the oil usage issues. I will probably do most of the engine oil mods. I do see where the Rotella is popular here. What else are you guys running. Let the flames begin !.

It's not a "put up or shut up" kind of thing. We just like to see what different oils will really do. There is still a subjective side to things; e.g. some folks feel that their bike shifts better or the clutch works better with a given brand of oil.

Nothing wrong with using a case of Agip that you've got laying around if there's no other use for it in the shop.

The high dollar Agip I Ride full Syn was for my wife’s Vespa 300. We sold the Vespa, but I had already bought a case for half the ($15.80/liter) cost from a distributor (at $7.80 per liter) so I really need to make use of it. I like to joke about the oil threads. Some people are very passionate or adamant about their choice(s). I usually use the equivalent of what the OEM requires, except I change it sooner. But I do like the synthetic oils as they give me piece of mind-they are suppose to handle a higher heat load . And also because I can, (Lol).

BTW, my riding partner, also from south Texas (Sugar Land), has nearly 100,000 miles on his '08 KLR650; he's consulted with an automobile engineer, he's studied his oil temperatures, in the sandy land, down by the Rio Grande; even installed heat sink fins on his crankcase . . . looks like thermodynamics are always with us!

Beyond that, in his experience, the only oil-related malfunction running a KLR650 he says he knows of is . . . oil starvation. YMMV!

When (and if) you ever get your KLR650, post pictures! Otherwise . . . it didn't happen! :)

I'd like to see his data on oil temps and such, but I know "spit in one hand, wish in the other"...

What I have seen, here in oh-so-temperate California, is that the oil temperatures on the KLR run really cold; in the low 200s when I'd like to see 225-230. If the ambients are below 65 the engine struggles to get the oil temperatures over 200. That engine can radiate heat faster'n a lizard that just lost its tail.

I have considered insulating the crankcase, never installing fins.

I'd really like to see a few pics of the cooling fins on his oil sump. :)
I can't image that they were truly needed, but it had to of been a unique project. Welded or JB Welded, Damocles?

I've previously suggested to spray foam into plastic bags tucked into the skid plate areas.
The cured foam blocks would then be removable/reusable. :)

What @pdwestman said. I have recently discovered that you can buy small lots of two-part polyurethane foam at Lowes. Formerly the only option was the air-curing expanding insulation foam, and that doesn't work well in a bag.

May I suggest that you use the "Google Custom Search" function on the RH side of theses threads.
I think the Original forum "Search" function feature has been pretty much 'Incapacitated'!



Now in the Wal-Mart Castrol oil video, I read "Fluid TITANIUM Technology" on the Castol jug.

Is that anything like "elastic metal" from a Jeopardy final Question recently?

I see a lot of modern water cooled bikes have a coolant jacket or ports right at the oil filter screw on area. Looks Tom hit it on the head, the OEMs want to get the oil up to temp faster and keep it up. Guessing this also may add to higher MPG, but that’s a guess.

With 96 K miles on his engine, he said: "I am now using Mobil 15-50w synthetic."

He doesn't change his oil on long rides (3-4 K miles), changes oil filter every other oil change. Favors synthetic because of heat range stability; has observed 240 degrees F. oil temperature. With holes in his skid plate to enhance oil cooling, and his fins, he makes it through hot south Texas summers! On long rides at 5000 + rpm for long distances, no appreciable oil consumption between changes.

Professionally, he used oil analysis for intricate mechanical equipment used by his manufacturer employer, but hasn't had his KLR650 oil analyzed to date.

I'll ask for pictures of his fins and post it here. Over the years, he's consulted with KLR Cary (up to Cary's untimely death), Eagle Mike, and Bill Watt (Thermo-Bob developer); as well as "Aprilia" (Chuck, of Arizona), all acknowledged genuine and authentic KLR authorities (not to diminish the expertise of the competent participants on this forum, whom I respect).

How does he measure oil temperature, and is it a constant measurement via instrumentation or casual and deliberate?

I would not be concerned with an oil temp spike to 240 and would be happy as a pig in poop to see constant oil temps somewhat below that.

Knowledgable folks who, admittedly, lean toward performance tuning, feel that oil temps in the 235-255 range are optimal. I'd like to see the low end of that for a normal transportation engine. At that, I can be sure that anything that is 'bad' (really, water and fuel and compounds generated by combustion byproducts) can be flashed off. These would be sump temperatures.

I understand his preference for a synthetic due to its ability to withstand high heat but he's not seeing high heat, even if he were to forgo the cooling mods to his sump. 'High heat' to a synthetic is something in the 300 range.

Hot damn, but we done got us a good ol' oil thread going' here!

Don't know how or where the oil temperature was measured, but . . . he says his data was corroborated with the findings of Bill Watt; I assume their techniques and their instrumentation were similar.

Interesting. Bill lives in Pheonix and rides around, most of the year, with a shield to block off airflow to the engine so he can try to keep oil temps up:
