I bought a 2006 klr 650 a couple of weeks ago. The previous owner told me it was lowered previously. This weekend I moved the forks back up and switched out the original dog bones. Now the bike leans over more on the kickstand now that it's 1-2 inches higher. I was wondering how long a stock kickstand is. I'm thinking that the kickstand I have may be shortened from the original owner. A picture of it is below.

I doubt very much that that kickstand has ever been shortened.
Or that is the best home welding job, with the best color matched paint I've ever seen on the net.

From the bottom weld to the top weld, my stock and standard Gen 1 stand measures 10.5 inches.
About 11.75 inches from the floor to the center of the pivot bolt, parallel to the stand.
Center of pivot bolt head is about 11 inches vertically above the floor.

I just took another look at your pic, hummmmmmmm. Good paint.
OEM stand measures 3.5 inches from the top weld to the spring pin!

That explains the odd springs.

On my bike from the bottom weld to the top weld it is currently 9 inches. So that inch and a half is probably why I have the extra lean then. Thanks for the help.

Plenty of stock KLR650 Kick Stands on eBay. I'd either keep the shortened Kick Stand (as well as the lovely springs) and the lowering Dog Bones, for if/when you ever need/want to sell it, or put them on eBay as a package. Maybe recoup some of your expenses bringing things back to original?

Does anyone else know how long their stock 1st generation kickstand is? I ordered one off of eBay and when it came it's the same length as the other one I had. So now I'm guessing that it should be 9 inches from weld to weld like this one is.

I just measured both of mine; 10" from weld to weld. Other dimensions are similar to what Paul told you. I get approx 12" from the center of the "foot" to the center of the pivot bolt. Both mine are absolutely unmodified (the one bike had 577 miles on it when i got it.

Cheers,
Dave

I'll have to dig up my stock and measure, but I did have one shortened even though the bike is stock height. You might not be able to tell visually if it's been lowered. Mine is pretty clean even after paining it looked stock.

My KLR was constantly falling over opposite the kickstand side when loaded up with gear.

Cabrito - In the first picture it looks like your kickstand is about 10 3/4 inches from weld to weld. For that stock kickstand what year bike is that off of?

I can't believe I just ordered one off of eBay and it's also shorter that the stock one! The one I bought off of eBay was off of a 1999 KLR 650. I guess I'll have to end up sending it back...

measuring from the welds and with an angled foot is hardly a precise measurement; I'd suggest that mine, Pauls and Cabrito's are all virtually identical. It's possible (and likely) that Gen2 sidestands are shorter since the 2008+ bikes have 1.8" less suspension travel.

DPelletier - I realize that the measurement is not precise but just by looking at the pictures you can tell that the one I just bought off eBay is a little less than 9 inches from weld to weld and the one on Cabrito's is around 10.5-11 inches from weld to weld. The one I just bought was supposed to be from a 1999 KLR 650 so that would still be a 1st generation bike. I'm assuming the seller on eBay thought it was from a 1999 but maybe it is really from a 2nd generation bike.

Yes, sorry; I wasn't insinuating that your e-bay purchase one is the same, only that the slight variations in measurements by Paul, myself and Cabrito are within measurement error IMO. Most Gen2 stands I've seen look like the one Dan posted and the differences are obvious. All Gen1 sidestands are the same AFAIK. Maybe the early Gen2 stands were different....or maybe the one you bought is modified. Bit of a head scratcher for sure.

All kickstands pictured are Gen1 stands. The Gen2 are totally different.
