Hello KLR-Community,

today my KLR 250 broke down and is having some starting issues.

Earlier today i went for a small drive, the KLR was starting and running fine like always after
around 20min into my trip i had to take a left on a steep hill and after shifting down she suddenly died on me,
no bang no weird noise nothing. Of course i tried kicking her on right away but she wouldnt start and
occasionally she would just misfire out of the exhaust. Since i couldnt get her to start(trust me i was trying) i got her towed home.


At home i checked the valve clearance since its the only thing i changed recently but theyre still in spec the way i set them.
I did not try to start the KLR when she cooled down, which im regretting now.

I wanted to check the compression but my compression tester fittings+socket
wont fit in the tight spark plug space so this will have to wait for now.

I just need some input on what to check next or what could be the cause of it.

Also does somebody know what resistances the ignition coil should measure?


Excuse my rough english im not a native speaker, i tried keeping it short.

The airfilter is clean,

i have spark,

and fuel is going to the carb i also checked the float level and
if there are any contaminants in the float bowl.

A conventional compression test is questionable with an operational Kawasaki Automatic Compression Release, in my view. With the starter lever, you can FEEL whether you have compression or not.

You say you have spark; no need to fret over ignition coil resistances , but here they are from the Kawasaki KLR250 Supplement manual:

Primary coil: 0.17-0.25 OHM
Secondary coil: 3.2-4.8 KOHM

Try some STARTING FLUID (have fire extinguisher handy). If the engine runs on the starting fluid, but not on gasoline, the carburetor is not providing a combustible mixture to the engine. Carb disassembly and cleaning/adjustment in order (see, "Carb Overhaul" thread on this website).

If you adjusted the valves between the compression and power strokes (NOT the exhaust and intake strokes), you should be good to go.

Im sorry for the late respond but i finally got around to wrenching on the klr

I got her to fire up with the Starting fluid and after cleaning the carburator once more she seems
to be running fine now(i havent taken her for a longer ride yet)

I also noticed when taking apart the carb my float bowl drain was clogged
which might explain where the contamination came from.
