When the KLR 650 was introduced in the late 80's its power output was quoted at 48hp (35 kw). Then due to emission and noise regulations it got less and less so that my 2007 is rated only at 34 hp (25kw). I would like to get the bike up to the 1988 35kw. What has been done and what needs to be changed to derestrict it?

Do you know at what location those two powers were measured? I think the 34 hp is at the rear wheel. The 48 hp may have been measured at the crank shaft.

What confuses me is that in the official data of the bike there are different outputs. In 1988 when the bike came out Kawasaki Germany stated 48 PS (hp). Then in the 1990's the output in the magazines went down to 42 PS (hp). Now the power is stated around 35 hp on the "modern" ones. I understand that Kawasaki had to detune the bike in order to conform with noise an emission regulations.

Just curious how they did this and if it is reversible, eg to bring the engine back to 1988 spec...

Well Lars then explain this, the KLR 650 A, B, C & E series engines from 1987 to 2018 have Never been able to pull more than about 105 MPH (168 kph) indicated on the lying speedometers, regardless of their posted ratings in the various countries, to the best of my knowledge!

Real speed of about 95 mph. Sorry to disappoint you. :(

Some countries even require them to be restricted to about 65 mph!

There is no appreciable difference in output in ANY year KLR and engine changes have been very minor and some were not for the best. There were the 1996 changes (one pce balancer sprocket, gearing changes, output shaft sprocket attachment, valve cover), none of which affected the power. The 2008 got different piston/rings which turned out badly along with AIS, an emissions change on the exhaust cam, and some other minor changes; again, no appreciable change in output. 2012: clutch dropped a plate.......other minor Gen2 changes include the addition of a carb inlet filter....this is all off the top of my head so I may have missed a minor detail or two but....

Bottom line is that any advertised HP difference is the same as the advertised Gen1 weight of 337 lbs and the Owner's manual mentioning 6th gear: complete fiction.

The only exception is that (as Paul mentioned) some markets came with a "learner restricted" setup which included an additional hole in the slide that limited output; Australia for eg. Again, engine output is the same once the slide hole is blocked.

approximately 34hp at the rear wheel is what all year KLR engines produce when running properly. you can get another 2-4 with a KLX Jet kit, snorkle-ectomy/air box mods, decent filter and good silencer. 3-4 hp boost is available from the 685 BB kit. Beyond that you are looking at cams, porting.....or maybe one of Eaglemike's 719 kits......but even all that won't likely get you much past 45-50hp.

The KLR "is what it is". The desire for big HP (i.e. 50-60) is an itch best scratched by another bike......the KTM690R comes to mind.

Having owned a few Ducatis with high hp and torque and now riding around on KLRs, I just don't understand the desire to boost so much power out of the KLR. I think it puts out just the right amount of power. I've never been in a KLR situation where I just didn't have the power I needed to do what I was doing.

It sounds as if the KLR's power has been pretty constant over the years. Is yours a case of wanting to optimize power...or needing more? In the former, there's a few 'easy' things you can do if not done already in order to realize a modest increase. As for the latter, it sounds like you'll need to perform significant mods to get into that neighborhood. Least, that's the way I read the posts.

Found the detune due to holes in the slider and even different length on the German forum as well. I am not looking to get more power out of the KLR engine. I am just curious what has been done to the engine over the years in order to keep the smog and noise brigade happy. Reversing this to me is not tuning, its bringing it up to original spec.

There are evaporative controls that take vapors, that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere, and trap them in a charcoal canister. The vapors are sucked into the intake to be burned.

They have introduced an Air Injection System that injects air into the exhaust to more fully burn the unspent hydrocarbons.

They might or might not, at some time (depending on what market you are in) installed or not installed a catalytic converter in the muffler.

They changed the exhaust valve timing in 2008 with the New Shapes. The Fugly exhaust cams close 6 degrees earlier than the New Shape. They both open at the same time. The change might have been related to emissions issues.

There might have been some other niggly changes, but I don't remember them. There were certainly no major changes that drastically had an impact on the performance of the engine at the rear wheel, and removing the evap or AIS does nothing to improve performance. The evap can, under the right circumstances, fill with fuel and create starting issues. The AIS system has some weight to it but operates off of engine vacuum, so it is not stealing horsepower.

They aren't keeping the smog brigade happy and is the reason why they stopped at the 2018 year model.
