Anyone out there interested in changing out all the lights on the KLR to LED lightning. The whole ball of wax lights!
I am aware of the low load flasher issues and the needed increase in wiring for brighter lights. Of course the increase in brightness might not draw more amps if the lights are LEDs.
I am hoping to start a discussion to learn more as I research the LED lights and the changes I would like to make to my KLR.

I tried HID lamps for the head lights, but didn't like them much. Maybe OK for low beam, but too much time delay between hitting the switch and warm-up on high beams. Also the high beam reflects back brilliantly enough from reflective signs to almost blind you. The high beam also reflects back from reflective road stripes far down the road making you think you can see a long way, but if the animals are not wearing reflective fur, you won't see them.

I haven't worried about LED turn signals because I haven't burned out one in over 105,000 miles on my 2008 KLR and I haven't remove the tag bulb to see what type of base it has.

I have swapped all my bulbs to LEDs on my Gen 1 except for the turn signals, probably won't bother with them as they only pull juice when on and should last forever.

For the headlight, I went with the simpler, cheaper and less wattage ADV Monster H4 stores.advmonster.com/h4-led-headlight/?src=prn#ProductReviews

It only uses 20 watts, and is noticeably brighter than stock. The Ida biker one is brighter still, but has a fan and cost more $.

Between the 35 watts saved on the headlight and others who have measured reporting another 11-ish watts saved for the other always on bulbs (instrument, tail running light, license plate), freeing up ~46 watts is pretty good for about $100 total.

Here's what I used for the brake light: 1157-R45-T 1157 Red $24.95, and the license plate: 67-W15 Natural White $6.95. The others I used were posted above except I went with amber color turn signal indicator..

Outstanding feed back. I have been reading about the different options and a couple of friends are encouraging me to make a YouTube of the changes. Of course, I like watching your entries and reading your responses.
I am sure I want to change out all the lights so I can add running lights in the turn signal arms. I ride to work at 6:30 in the morning and now it is pitch black then. It is getting closer to being dark when I arrive to work and when I leave. One little brake light is not enough safety for me.
I do like the 3 blink or 3 flash tail lights, but I have to find out if they are legal in Kansas and Missouri, (I cross the border to and from work daily!)

Both of you provide me with great information. Thanks! I think I will try to post something in the form of a "Step By Step" for other KLR tinkers!

All I can advise is if you are going with LED buy quality bulbs from a reputable supplier.

I melted a reflector using LED's purchased on eBay. I'm now regretting that "upgrade".

I read another couple of submissions where the owners complained about melting lenses. Just what I need to learn about.

What was the name and model of the manufacture of the "hot" LED?

My 2009, bought used, came with an LED bulb in the low beam. It never melted anything, so I think it is safe.

I replaced it with incandescent. Never really evaluated it; the prior owner didn't ride at night and simply wanted less current draw during daylight. I ride a lot at night and need as much light as I can have, being really old, decrepit, and blind.

Firstly I should say that this happened on my Goldwing.

As to manufacturer and model there aren't any to report. eBay junk.

Stick to LED's from Super Bright and you'll be fine. Or at least I haven't had issues from the ones I bought there.
