Been meaning to post this for a while, finally found an aftermarket alternative which is just as quiet as the OEM. We’re all familiar with the Lexx exhaust, but there’s a quiet core insert called the Tail Saver. Maybe everyone already knows about it but I figured I’d pass the info along. I love it. The bike is just as quiet if not quieter than the OEM. I’ll post a photo of mine later. Not sure how it works with different jetting setups.

I'm thinking of picking one up to compare to my LeoVince X3 on my other KLR - the FMF Q4 on my 2001 is just too loud at a trail compliant 96db rating.

I actually have not, so forgive me when I say "Im telling you" haha. But yea I always loved how quiet the OEM was but it was so ugly and heavy so I'm glad I found the Trail saver.

I'm a fan of quiet.....but I can't stand the looks and weight of the 12lb stock silencer. I believe stock is around 89db, my LeoVince is 94 and the FMF Q4 is rated at 96db. If the Lexx with the trail insert is 92 or less, it'll be a winner in my book.

Except for the spark arrestor screen and the holes in the inner pipe, the Lexx Trail Saver insert looks very much like my home made 'turned down & out' insert which I made for my stock exhaust. My outlet is 1&1/8th inch.

The 1987 internal mini glass pack (tweety) is NOT attached to the Krizman spiral diffuser spark arrestor like several pics of newer oem mufflers have shown. So my stock spark arrestor is still functional.

Yes I know its hideous, and most of that noise reduction stems from the fact that its pointed down at the ground. In the end it was exactly what I was looking for.

I have it on my 2017 and I really like it. Lexx claims is about 85DB on a well tuned otherwise stock bike. I believe it. Mine is very tolerable and I am actually listening to the engine instead of the exhaust with no noticeable loss of power/grunt. :doublethumb:

Thanks for uploading some photos, every time I try to upload something it just says the file is too big.

They must have changed it recently. About a year ago I put the Trail Saver in mine and it made very little difference. Still too loud. I'm glad to hear it works now.

Perhaps they sold you the basic "Quiet Core rather than the Trail Saver Quiet Core? Or, how many miles are on your Lexx? Could it need to be repacked?

Lexx makes 5 inserts, 2 of which are in their quiet core series that are actual baffles with spark arrestor screens. The race tip is basically a wide open 46mm tip followed by a 40mm and 36mm tips each reducing the db level by only a couple of dbs. All 3 of these are well over a 100 dbs. The 4th insert is the Quiet Core Baffle and it protrudes out of the tip at a 45 degree angle and is designed to bring the noise down to a park legal 96 dbs. The 5th insert is the Trail Saver Quiet Core Baffle which is designed to be the quietest silencer at only 85 dbs and it protrudes out of the tip at 90 degree radius. I attached 3 pictures, the 46mm, 40mm & 36mm all look essentially the same so the first picture represents those 3 inserts. The second picture is the Quiet Core Baffle and the third is the Trail Saver Quiet Core Baffle which I have in my Lexx and it is significantly quieter than the stock exhaust.

Cheers
Kev
