From Houston, I've ridden some of the trails in the Lufkin area. Some of the Roads are good riding, but the heavy sand in the area can be an issue.
There are many roads in the area on Public Hunting Land (obtained through a map from the GOV), that will give some good idea's. Most of these area's are East of Lufkin towards The National Forest. Some are "pretty Good".
on the way from Jackson Hill Marina to another location on the SW side of the lake (Sam Rayburn) the GPS told me there was a "road" through the National Forest, so i followed it and it turned into one of those old public access roads (washed out in a couple places) leading to a couple hunting stands and emerging onto gravel road. Along some sections of the lake where i've ridden on the SW side there appear to be a lot of ATV trails heading off into the woods.
Try this one. From Lufkin, Take 103 East, Go North on 147, 3 1/2 miles to Private Road 7130.(31 25,904' N + 94 09,458' W). Go west and continue across 1277 going straght towards 1196.(31 27,283' N +94 18,060' W).There are 2 Public Hunting Camps along this route.
The roads are accessible for the KLR. Sand, wash outs and Logging Truck Ruts, but after the rain," Hang it up". the Route covers about 23 miles. A topo software or even a good texas Road Atlas will show it, Better yet; a Texas Public land Limited use Permit is another good map. I also know a few other places. Let me Know how you like this one. WB:16a:
hey Bill, that is a nice ride. :16a: Remind me again what a green street sign labelled PR means. I've heard that read street signs indicate private roads which some have been asked to not ride without permission, but i'm new to Texas and don't know all the local rules. Thanks. I look forward to riding in this area again soon as long as it's not hunting season. :character00110::32a:
