Wow... I was doing the exact same thing last night. Lockjaw posted a Dakar Vid on his FB and after I watched that one I watched four or five more just before I went to bed.

Can't wait for Sunday. I just need to find the time to swap my wheels before then..

On a side note - My friend Jeff on a 650 V-strom was going to do the ride again, but poor dude broke his ankle last month in a crash during a track day. He must have dumped it at the last doc wong ride five or six times and didn't hurt himself. One get-off at a track day and he breaks his ankle. Bummer..

Darn, would love to make it, but leaving Sunday to ride up to Seattle. If anyone wants to join me, 3 days, CA-NV-CA-OR-WA. I'm camping on the way up, then we'd have to split ways in Seattle.

Hey guys I would like come up Sunday and ride but there's no way I can make it to the meeting on Friday evening. Is that a big issue with Doc Wong?
I know that he prefers that you attend the class first, but I'm pretty sure you are an experienced off-pavement rider, and if you just sent him an email he might be open to that. The class has a lot of instruction and slide show. The ride has a few hours of doing riding drills before the actual ride. This really is a beginners class and ride.

Do you think you might get bored?

Yeah, what he said, that was exactly it, saw his vid then got suck into those old 80s french and german series ones. I like old school dakar..

-So basically, the last time was kinda big and took alot of energy from the guys who knew what was up. The idea is, we get some experienced guys (Us) to run sweep and help guide it along and help out the newbies.

SLO- I sent him an email to let him know whats up, Im sure if he has any serious objections he will let us know but other wise I think you should plan on joining us.
Bring a $20 bill and make sure you sign his liabilty form and you should be good to go.

Cab- I emailed Sauro to see if he want s to join us as well..

Depending on where everyone is coming from, Id like to arrange a hook up in the South Bay and then onto Tres Pinos. I have any easy hook up spot off the 101 in SJ.

Anybody else let us know if your game!!

Hey Doc

Looks like Mike and I are able to make it for the ride on Sunday to help out and run sweep again. We have one other
off road experienced rider that would like to come as well but he cannot make the Friday night talk. He would like to
join us for sunday though and has plenty of off road experience.

Is this ok??
Doc Wong 6:58p
Hi Chris,

He can come to the Sunday ride if he has done the Friday talk before, otherwise it is a requirement for Sunday.

I dont believe he has but has tons of offroad experience and a KLR, he wants to come and help with sweep and trail guide with
Mike and I. He would be a good asset in your arsenal of tricks to keep the herd in good order :)
**Still waiting for reply back but that's where it stands.**

SLO- Your in Paso Robles, thats kind of far to make the Friday after work meeting huh? If there's anyway you can come up it would be great to have you.. Ill keep you posted.

I don't see how he could turn you away if you showed up. Perhaps you were just going for a ride and came upon this big group of Noobs, and decided to ride with us... I think you would be an asset to the group just based on your riding experience, but on the other hand I can kind of see why he requires people to be at the class on Friday.

It really does prepare you for what the day is going to be like as far as how it all goes down. I'd say that some people with more experience might go to the Friday class and decide that the ride portion is not for them.

There is a lot of down time on ride day while he instructs on the drills and during the drills. That is the part you might find boring and not have a lot of patients for.

In his mind I could see this as a potential distraction. It is his ride so it's only fair that it's his rules. Plus, like I said this is supposed to be a beginners training course. Not just a big Adventure group ride.

I can see both sides of this discussion.

Let me explain a little more.

In one of my conversations with Doc I asked him if he would like me to bring some experienced guys to help out, to which he said "Yes" that would be great.

Im not sure if he got what I was getting at so I sent him another email explaining further regarding SLO...

I just had this mounted yesterday as my Gripster was worn out:

Metzler Sahara 3

Interested to see how it fairs in the dirt Sunday, defiantly a few clicks slower on the highway, not much but.....

Looks pretty dirt worthy...

Do I spy new brake pads? I did both of mine today.

Yeah, I did that after the Area51 trip as I had worn it to the metal. I got pads for the front the other day but once I pulled the wheel I could see the old ones still have life in them so I didnt change them.

Meeting point is here at 9am

btw heres a link to a map of the area

Google Map

South Bay Riders Thread

Apparently that place was closed as a rec area in '08 but the main county roads that we use are accessable.
The EPA study is being refuted as inaccurate and there is a lot of good info on that forum, it looks like its going to get fully reopened soon.
Apparently there was some asbestos/cancer concern which was equivalent to smoking ONE cigarette PER YEAR so they closed the whole place down.
