The winter is closing in on us here in N.E.Pa.
My new '09 is getting ready for the "long sleep".
So it's time to see what I want to "farkle it"
I did the .22 mod and rejet, (out went the snorkle, drilled 3- 1" holes, so, it's breathing nice now).
the Thermo Bob kit
The Doo
(all with less tha 100 miles, better to do it now)
Taller Cee Bailey windshield
Shorten the kick stand
I was runnin' to work this AM and thought I'd like an exhaust that doesn't sound like a garden tractor.
But, all the ones I've seen, (or heard) have been so freakin Loud, that at my "refined" ( read-old) age, my poor ears don't need, (nor the neighbors at 5:30 in the morning).
What I'd like is a exhaust that'll give the bike a bit more torque at or below 1200 rpm, and a nice sound.
Any ideas???????????????????????????????????
Joe
I've desided that no bike is perfect til you spend a ton of $$ on it!:animal0034:

:

1200 rpm is idle speed you won't get any torque increase there no matter what you do. You ride at idle? Didn't think so.

All aftermarket mufflers will be louder than stock. If all you are wanting is to change the exhaust note look into the low buck exhaust mod.

Spec's leading you in the right direction. Both for minimal noise and of course Cheap price.
I did the airbox, carb, then cored the baffle. This keeps the system flow-matched and at it's most efficient by keeping those three main components freer but not unrestricted.

The sound is a nice little bark when on the throttle but quiet at idle and cruise. There
is no real reason for an aftermarket can (other than saving 200 lbs) unless a big bore,
headwork, or radical cam has been added.

Enjoy your '09! I love mine.

My first idea was to core the stock can out, but was worried it'd sound like a "Quad with a cored silencer".
You know the kid with a trashed small banger 4 quad, that's "FAST".
The plastic all poped riveted and zip tied together. The machine hasn't been washed in YEARS, and the exhaust is just plain LOUD and STUPID!:35a:
Did I read or see on U tube that the cap on the KLR is stainless? or ?? and it was hard to reweld?????
I thought I get a can with a Db sound lever in the mid 90's to make it rumble a tad. Plus take off 50 lbs of sprung weight.
There is a bike junk yard close to my work I go to for "projects". Maybe I'll see if they have a can I can cut up, or?????? to try
I love the KLR, but gotta say I am tiring of the "cures" to make it nice. (this is my 3rd KLR from the '90s)
It was a toss up when I wanted a dualie between this and a Beemer 1200. (the price was the real kicker. If I was gonna tour on this dualie more, it'd be the beemer for the extra cc, but the price is another Harley)!
As for the torque down low, well my other rides, ('90 H.D. Electra, '07 H.D.Ultra, '09 Royal Enfield with a Cozy side car rig- my winter comuter rig, my KTM 200 and Beta trials bike),all seem to make power down low and you get used to comming outta a corner down in the basement of the RPM range, you get "lazy" and forget that you gotta run the KLR like a 125 2 stroke!

Just an old guy thoughts, take them with a few cans of beer!:49:

Yea the stock muffler is stainless, people have welded on the end cap though (for the low buck mod).

You could drop a tooth on the front sprocket if you aren't concerned with top speed as much. Rocky Mt. has them for 9 bucks! OEM is a 15.

on the torque, ever notice how low end suffers the more the sound (Db not pitch)
goes up?

Just sayin'.

As a side note, I rammed a sharpened-end lugwrench handle through both ends
of the can before being satisfied, and out two shredded exhaust gaskets. lol
The straight through portion is only a half-inch and neighbor friendly until hitting
the gas pretty hard. I don't recommend this officially since ya can't go back
once it's done and it's good to have a legal stock exhaust on hand just in case.
Mine is as radical as I feel I can get on a mostly free stage one. (42/155 jets +.22 mod)
Open airbox too. Swiss cheesed the poor thing. 50 mpg when lite on the throttle.
