I took my '11 on an 80 - 90 mile loop yesterday, over a variety of highways and all was well....for the most part. (still a little shaky and cautious but sure was enjoying laying into those S turns) Slowed down coming into town and could hear a buzzing noise. OK, it was dark, park the bike and come back to it in the morning.

This morning I fired it up to run some errands and the buzzing was louder. By the time I got around to looking at it, it was loud enuf to cause concern.

You know when you're trying to force a transmission into gear without using the clutch ?? The edges of the gears just touching makes a distinctive grating noise - just before things break. This sounds pretty much in that category but with "plastic gears," so to speak.

All the instruments read steady and solid, so not a speedo cable or the like. I pulled the stock windshield out from under the Lip, fired it up and revved the engine. Buzzing was right under my nose, so I reached down below the instrument cluster housing and started pushing and pulling - gently - at things.

When I lifted up on the instrument cluster the buzzing stopped. Let go - buzzing again. Everything I could reach seemed tight, considering it's all mounted in rubber. Before I tear into it and f**k something up, has anyone gone thru this ?? I've been reading on forums over the last few weeks until I'm nearly cross-eyed but haven't seen anything on a topic like this.

Coming home tonight it was much louder and I'm getting - have gotten - concerned.

You're not missing any screws from the Tupperware, are you? If any of the screws are missing the fairing could be vibrating against the instrument cluster.

Dunno. Threw it out to you guys before diving into the middle of it tomorrow morning, but all of the visible fairing screws were in place including the 2 in the deep wells under the windshield. Yah, the thumper does vibrate. Phew.

Haha....triggers a memory. Many long years ago while on a Destroyer Escort in the Navy, a guy on our mess deck frequently engaged in an activity that earned him the nickname of "Thumper." :28:

Could you reach up under the cluster and check to make sure that the speedo cable is tight on the cluster end? It might be a little loose making it buzz and when you picked up on the cluster it might have tightened it up enough to stop it from buzzing... I had to replace the cable on my 08 and I think it was just one of those knurled finger tighten nuts?

Could you reach up under the cluster and check to make sure that the speedo cable is tight on the cluster end? It might be a little loose making it buzz and when you picked up on the cluster it might have tightened it up enough to stop it from buzzing... In your original post was the bike stationary or moving when you lifted up on the cluster? If you were stationary it is not likely to be the speedo cable as it is not turning when the bike is not moving.
My highway pegs made a strange sound at certain rpms, bike moving or not, that nearly drove me round the bend before I found it.

In your original post was the bike stationary or moving when you lifted up on the cluster? If you were stationary it is not likely to be the speedo cable as it is not turning when the bike is not moving.
My highway pegs made a strange sound at certain rpms, bike moving or not, that nearly drove me round the bend before I found it.

Good call! Indeed, the speedo wouldn't be turning if the bike wasn't moving... Could be crash bars vibrating as well? Loose mount bolt perhaps?

Absolutely! Those would be some of the first things I would check. Of course nothing ever rattles loose on KLR's or Harleys!

I mentioned in my original post that the bike was stationary. I hoped someone had run into this in the past and could point me to it. I "will" check in the morning for anything loose but had hoped to avoid taking the whole cluster loose.

I don't have crash bars on the bike.

The buzzing started as a very light thing and has gotten worse as I rode it today to the point where it's distracting.

I'll let you know what I find.

I'm curious as to what it is as well. If it's doing it when stationary (sorry, missed that in your original post) it definitely has to be something loose. Hope it's easy to track down for you!

Now that The Moon of The Frozen Time appears to be upon us, I have a Seek & Destroy mission on the to-do list. I have a high frequency vibration noise that appears right around 3000 rpm, or - at the perfect putt putt speed for cruising through towns... the best effect is as you decelerate down through 3000 rpm. Whatever is making the noise says " rrrrrrrrrreeeeEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWwwwwwww...." - you can actually hear it from 50 ft away... it will do it by throttling up standing still so it is metal/plastic vibrating someplace - the high idle method has a really short rpm range it will do it in -...

It sound like a kid's Fisher-Price toy cow mooing... being a Cowasaki maybe it's normal

I don't take my bikes apart chasing non mission-disabling "issues" during riding season. I would rather ride them than fix on them any day. It will be going on the stand and I will begin doing CSI until I find this noise...

Yup had the same buzzing on my '12, worse around 3000 rpm.
Drove me crazy, it was obviously coming from the instrument cluster.
Get a couple of 7/8" rubber test tube stoppers and wedge them down between the the bottom of the windshield and the front of the instrument cluster.
Immediate cure, sounds and feels like a different bike.
I posted the same on the other .net forum and it helped a lot of people out with the same problem.

Check the headlight housing. Had a buzzing that was driving me nuts, standing still or riding. Put my hand on the front headlight housing, buzzing went away. Now with the silence I've heard another one tho...damn thumpers...😉 Wouldn't have it any other way tho.

I had the same thing as lugnutz. Mines a ,12 had that same buzz from day one. Got worse in certian rpms.. Had to wedge two rubber mounts with two sided tape between the instrument cluster and the windshield .. Fixed that jack!

Had what sounds like the same annoying sound on my 2012, put some self adhesive foam around the cluster where the fairing contacts & where the cluster could possible contact the metal bar below it. Fixed my noise problem in that area. While you are at it put some of that foam around the clutch cable where it contacts everything around the front of the frame & ignition switch, stops that annoying squeek when you turn the handlebars lol.
