I have been shopping for a bike that will be a commuter, forest service road rider (to access the BC skiing!), and the occasional long distance tourer. I think I've settled on the KLR650 and thus I have joined these forums.

I'm planning on buying used and have been immersing myself in the plentiful online info on DSs, especially the mechanics/maintenance/repair threads and pages in order to be a wise buyer and eventually owner.

It's a daunting process, especially since this will be a first bike, but I've learned a ton from resources like this one. Thanks

Going to check out a locally posted FS '93 KLR650 for $1900. No other info given except for it runs and looks great. Will certainly get more info tomorrow before driving out to see her especially maintenac history which should be extensive. Any particular advice ya'll might have in looking at 15 year old bike will be appreciated as I have more $ than this budgeted as I was thinking of a model < 10 years old. I'm unsure if I should wait for a newer and possibly more hassle-free ride. Being without experienced riding friends in this first bike purchase is nerve-racking! thanks

These things all depend on condition, history and miles. a '93/$1,900 could be a rip or a great bargain.

Remember, there's a difference between worth and value. Market value is what a knowledgable, willing buyer will pay. Worth is what the item means to someone as far as usefulness, practicality and sentimentality. It's not unusual for an item to be worth, to the owner or buyer, considerably more or less than it's market value. That's why, comparing two houses - both in similar condition, size, construction, etc - one may be worth far more than the other simply because of neighborhood.

As a general guide for you - with little experience and no bike support-system buddys - I'd look for something that would require few repairs/updates and that would have a low learning curve. That generally means a very well maintained later model (don't mistake addons (farkles) for conscientions maintainence and care).

edit - when I bought my wifes bike, I paid a little more than it's true value -- because it was yellow, her favorite. So it was worth more to me than it may have been to someone else.

cyoung and I are working on a Utah Tech day, something I've not seen in the almost 3 years since I purchased mine (other than Moab getherings). So I'm sorry if I've hijacked this thread a bit, but I'm driven by the excitement at getting together, accomplishing a few mods, and riding above Bountiful. We're looking at 9/20 or 27.

No problem with the hijack, if I had a bike (and even without it) I'd be quite interested. One of my goals with this first bike purchase is to enter the world of understanding automotive machinery and gain some competency. I thought this might be easier on a 20year old design MC instead of my awd car with 5 independent computers running the show!

Be sure to post the date on the TECH DAYS/GROUP RIDES FORUM if ya'll nail down a date, or with the question of a date. Maybe post on advrider.com too if you ever go there. They seem to have heavy usage too.

Still shopping...

I didn't chat with either of you on a green ('02?) at the park n ride @ the mouth of Big Cottonwood the other night did I? It was a sweet green baby with guards, handlebar protection, and luggage...

not me

It wasn't me. My riding has been limited to commuting from West Jordan to Westminster College. I was most likely across the street at the 7-11, driving the Yukon and rehydrating after another day of climbing in one of the Cottonwoods.

I think I found a bike in GA. Posted on Craigslist: '08 with 900 mi for $4300. Conversation with owner went well. Overdue for first service but oil's been changed. $500 deposit wired to GA...bike is at dealership for evaluation prior to final payment for bike and first service.

Tomorrow, pending good eval, this bike will be my first. Just have to wait two months to fly down there after finishing this summer job, visit with family and friends as I learn to ride it well, then come home on it!
