Hello all. I currently have a 2001 Honda 929RR in immaculate condition but feel like i want another dual sport. i used to have a Yamaha XT350 and loved it. I found a guy close by that is willing to trade me his 2006 KLR 650 for my bike. i want to know what some of you would do.

To me it would be like trading a Corvette for a Kubota. Not dissing the KLR one bit but would he be willing to sell the KLR outright? You can have more than one bike you know. Keep the Honda for shredding the asphalt and get the KLR for picking the trails.

I guarantee you'll be saying to yourself "Gee, I wish I still had that RR".

I would trade in a heartbeat....just because I may only last a week on a litre bike.....augh!

You do know that the KLR has a whopping 34HP right...?

I buy things from people by first looking at them, their other toys, cars, trucks what have you, also their home.....then I look at the thing they are trying to sell me. I figure if they have looked after the other items there is a good chance they have done the same for what it is I'm trying to buy.
Then I would look for the obvious signs of neglect, abuse and poor maintenance. How many miles etc, rub marks to prove such mileage...? What the over all condition the thing is in. Do they look honest? Are they the first owner? If so, do they have the maintenance records etc? What has this item been used for? A dirt bike or street adventure rider? Then what add ons he has on it? Has the DOO been done or does he look puzzled by this question? This year of bike shouldn't have an oil issue like the 08's and up have. Take some pics and post them up. What value do you put on your bike? What is the interest in the trade for you?
I personally like the older version bikes over the newer version just because of the oil issue....yes some do not have it, but many do. It is an easy fix so to speak. A simple 685 kit will fix it and also reduce any engine vibrations you may feel.
Look at where the oil is in the sight glass. What colour is it? What type of oil does he run and how often does it get changed? Look at the air cleaner.

Hope this helps a bit.....if you need specific questions answered feel free to ask.

The addition of the KLR would make a nice trio of purpose driven bikes. Perfect !!!

Keep looking, I bet you can find one for a reasonable price.

I would post pics of my bike and his if it would let me but i need 15 posts before i can post a URL. His bike is bone stock with around 7 or 8k miles on it. it has side boxes on it as well as a 1550 pelican case mounted on the back. my bike has a ton of upgrades but all boltons. no internal motor work and 28k miles but mostly due to it being geared up. Its hard to put a price on the 929RR cause they only made 2 and they are rare to come across as clean as mine is.

I would research what you could get for your bike and then offer a price for the KLR. I can't see it being a good trade if you are thinking of money. Especially if your bike is at all rare and in good condition. A KLR is worth maybe $3500 in good condition in that vintage I think down below the border, up here add a grand easy!
You must be on a Honda forum, ask them and get their opinion what the bike is worth. IMHO, I would do two deals and pocket the difference then add it onto the KLR in way of farkles IF you want.

If you really wanted to get rid of the RR, I would sell it privately and then look for a reasonably priced KLR. Love KLR's but I think you'd be getting the short end of the stick on the trade deal...

I just looked up the Honda for used price ranges.....I was shocked! It isn't that far behind the KLR!!! It does have an extra 100 ponies though....lol.

I also understand about the economy, if you can kep both until the Honda sells for better money great, but if not and you are sold on the KLR do the dal..?

I understand this but the problem right now is our economy. lol
Good point :). Bikes in my neck of the woods sell for top dollar so I forget that the market isn't as high as in the States. Heck, in my local classifieds KLR's a couple years old with a few farkels are listed for more money than brand new ones!

Best of luck with whatever you decide, I think both bikes are fantastic, just for entirely different purposes :D
