I just put some Mefo Explorers on mine and love 'em: very nice handling on pavement or gravel. Can't comment on dirt/mud since I rarely get off road any more. They're pricey, though: hope I get some good life out of them so I can save up to buy another set when they wear out.

I also got the Mefo Explorers and so far they have been great. When I was looking for new tires price was not my biggest concern. Everything you read says how dangerous motorcycles are, and for the most part they are correct. Yet you see people looking for the cheapest tire they can find. Every bit of control you have on your bike rest on 2 small spots on the road and I don't think thats a good place to go cheep. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying a cheep tire can't be be good tire or an expensive tire bad. Juts that price should not be the main deciding factor.

I like to ride and commute every work day so for me tires have to be economical. All tires sold in America have to meet DOT standards so the basic assumption is that there aren't any inherently unsafe tires.

What I want in a tire is predictability meaning that I know how it's going to react within my normal riding envelope. My 2nd consideration is cost vs. wear. Spending more money on a tire doesn't necessarily increase either condition IMHO.

The rider controls the bike. It's pretty hard to push tires beyond their limits especially for sane street riding. You can't blame tires for going into corners too hot or surface conditions but some do.

To be honest with you, part of the reason I chose the Mefos is because they seem to be proven and I couldn't find a bad comment about them anywhere. I doubt they'll last considerably longer than any of the more economical, yet good tires, but hope in the end they last long enough to make up for the price. Only time will tell, I guess.

I plan on buying another set when these wear out, but for the price I paid for them, I could have put brand new front/rear sets of good, yet less expensive rubber on the KLR for the next three years whether they needed to be changed out or not. Rear tire alone, probably the next five years. One could argue that a brand-new "low end" tire is still better than a "premium" tire that's three years old, even if the wear patterns are acceptable.

I'd never experienced any Mefos so took my chances on them, but unless you find the one set you're content with, I think everybody kind of dislikes choosing and buying new tires because you never know what you've got and whether you like them until they're under you. I suppose some people like the experimentation, but I'm not one of them.

It is nice to see reports and what people think of various tires here. You can say it either makes it more confusing or helps. I think it helps. I generally tend to avoid any kind of generic or non-KLR-related tire review sites. I suppose a dualsport is a dualsport, but I like to hear opinions and reviews straight from the KLR-rider horse's mouth, especially those that have tried many types of tires and, especially, under what conditions and on what surfaces they've used the tires.

I'm no expert and am not "demanding" on tires. Hell, I was happy with the stock Dunlops aside from the rear wearing out way too fast; not even 2,000 miles on it.
