Well, I finally got me a KLR. Have always wanted one and I'm picking up a nice used 2006 today. Thought I'd join the forum and make a few friends and get some advice on all things KLR. I'll post a pic of the new girl as soon as I can.

Looking forward to riding it all summer long!

Welcome aboard Jason, and congrats on the purchase. Feel free to ask anything. Find out if the doohickey has been done by the previous owner. If not that should be first priority.

Yeah, I've been reading about the doohickey while doing my research. What is it, where do I look for it, and how do I change it?

I printed off all of his stuff and made a manual out of them, along with all the other stuff I have found on the net.

You can purchase the doohickey at either:

You will need to get the flywheel puller and as for the wrench, just use a cheap 1 1/4 cresent wrench. An electric impact works much better to pull the flywheel with. Also you will need to purchase a torque wrench that registers in "INCH" pounds, NOT 'foot' pounds. It needs to read from 20 in/lbs up to about 200 in/lbs. You will also need the foot pound torque wrench as the flywheel bolt needs to be torqued back to 130 foot pounds. I got both of my torque wrenches at www.harbourfreight.com.

Welcome o2drums. Jason. Warning adding things to your bikes is a disease in which your bank account will slowly drain. But you will have fun and learn a lot.

Thanks for the warning Paulo!

Okay......so there is nothing in my paperwork from the previous owner that says that the doohickey was replaced. But the bolts on the cover plate have rounded edges indicating that the cover has been off. Is it safe to assume that it was done? The previous owner bought it and did a cross country trip to Alaska and back. So I assume he knew what he was doing when he bought a KLR.

Only way to know is to contact the previous owner or remove the cover to see. A lot of guys take that cover off carefully without damaging the gasket. And it doesn't take but ten or 20 minutes to find out. I bought my 94 klr with 12k and it wasn't done but my gasket was toast. I procrastinated for years doing the doo but I did it and it isn't hard to do. Review the http://www.klr650.marknet.us/Doohickey.pdf carefully

Doohickey is done!

Man, I bought this thing just in time too. I don't know about all of you, but gas here in Nebraska is $3.60 for the cheap stuff. I filled up my wife's mini-van yesterday to the tune of $90.00

Rediculous!

Yeah, cheap stuff is 3.65 here...$30 got me 8.2 gallons in the ole jeep the other day. I can see motorcycles, horses and Colt .45's making a big come back. The latter for protection of everything else... LOL

Welcome to the site, from Manitoba.... fuel is $1.25 a liter. Probably going to cost over $30.00 for a fill this weekend.
