Hi, I'm in Silver City in southwest New Mexico at 6,000 ft elevation and love it here. We have the huge Gila National Forest 5 miles to the north with its mountains and wilderness and open desert 5 miles to the south. There are "island" mountain ranges in the desert that have their own ecosystems and between the bunch we have paved highways to a general area, then dirt and/or gravel roads from there. Seems like the KLR650 will be a good performer on both.

My new (to me) 2011 KLR came home with me today and I've been crawling all over it learning about it. I'm coming to this from an '85 Honda VT500C that I've had for a couple of months and which is a very nice little bike but not as versatile and is too small for me. I'm 6'0"/180#/31" inseam. (yah, I'm finding the height a challenge, too, and have ordered the Seat Concepts low seat which I read about on this forum)

Riding the KLR for the 1st time today made me feel like I was riding a stepladder, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

One thing I did notice was the loud popping noise the intake makes. My single cylinder 400cc ATV does the same thing, but the 500cc Honda does not.....quiet as a whisper. Does anyone know the cause ??....and esp. a cure for that noise ??

I'm sure I'll be back with many more questions. Lar.

Greetings!

I'm new here myself - and not really any help when it comes to the mechanical stuff. There's a guy who lived in the Silver City area for awhile I've BS'd with online so I scoped out that area on Google Earth, and yes, it does appear to be prime habitat for a KLR!

Have a blast riding the various roads and trails!

Hahaha.....maybe a few more than that.

I lived in Santa Fe for 3 years and covered a lot of ground up in your area. Nice country. I really enjoyed Navajo Lake and the Bisti Badlands.

Welcome to the site.....from the other end of the continent.....north of the border where it's white outside at the moment....frost everywhere not snow yet, but it's coming! AUGH!!!

The popping you speak of it either coming from the pilot jet screw, which you will find under a factory plug at the front of the float bowl area on the carb. Drill out the plug and set the pilot jet to 2 turns out from seated. Another place to check for the issue is perhaps the exhaust header isn't sealing correctly at the head. Are the bolts tight, the crown nuts. Don't over tighten them, they can snap if use use too heavy a hand at them. Nicely snug....you understand I'm sure. There is a crush gasket there and if it isn't seated 100 percent correctly it will allow air to enter the system causing the popping you are hearing. Both are things to do for sure, as a maintenance issue type thing.

Well, it's a little nipply here, too, at 38º this morning.

I'll check out what you say, because the ATV and bike are 2 different critters, but I've done everything I can think of to stop the popping in the quad. What worked best was installing a 4 foot extension hose from the front of it to the air intake box. Quietened it down a lot - but gave a long lag between hitting the throttle and anything happening. I think that was caused by inertia of the air mass in that long tube, but that noise is definitely the intake. When the quad did get going, it went fine and very quietly.....I want the bike to tone down, too - but without a 4 ft. extension. :) Had to remove that tube from quad - impractical in use.

With the KLR it sounds just like an air compressor with the intake filter removed. If possible I want to stop it - then I'll do the same thing to Suzy - my Suzuki ATV.

The noise isn't going to kill me, but I'm a lifelong tinker-er by nature and made a good living at it for 25 years. I owned a restaurant appliance business and the nature of that is "winging" every job - never knew what you were going to run into and very frequently - daily - had to invent a way to get something going. It never got boring. Lar.
