Hello to all from western NY.
I had a chance to ride a KLR last weekend and was impressed. After logging thousands of miles on asphalt I feel the need to return to my first love...dirt.

My question is our local Honda dealer has a barely used 06' for $3500.00. The bike has only 506mi.

I also have a Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe on consignment at the local Yami/Kawasaki dealer who has an 11' for $5500.00.

Should I buy the barely used 06' or spend a couple of grand more to get the new model?

Your expert comments will be appreciated.....

I'm not an expert by any stretch but I'll give you my opinion :). If you plan on doing lots of dirt with it get the 06, plastics are a lot cheaper for the first gen models, also be sure to factor in any farkles it has (such as a skid plate and such). If you plan on riding quite a bit of street with it as well and piling on the miles I would go for the brand new one. Better wind protection for the highway and a bit of a warranty (be it ever so humble). All depends on your use and $$$ :)

When I bought mine I knew I would buy used but didn't know if I wanted the old style gen1 or new style gen 2. I asked and most agreed to get the gen2 if I planned to do more road riding.
I planned to do more road riding because why would I take a pig in the dirt when I have a badazz light dedicated dual sport?
Well the bike handles the gravel so dang good I've been doing a lot more dirt road riding than I intended to. Which is OK because it's a great bike and I'm happy with my purchase.

You sure started out here with a toughie..:)

IMHO, $3500 for a 06' is too much.. Put a couple thousand miles on it, and it's going to be worth $2200, just like all the other 06's..

And don't get me wrong.. I love the Gen 1 bikes.. I ride a Gen 1 bike. When my Gen 1 bike dies, I'm going to buy another Gen 1 bike..

I think you can find a better deal on a lightly used Gen 1 bike.. If you don't want to wait, I'd find a good deal on a new Gen 2..

With the options you've presented, that's where I'd be..

The only other option I'd add is hunting for a better deal on a Gen 1..

Thanks to all. will be off road more than on road so I am going to start the negotiation process on the 06' tomorrow.

My wife and I have a 2010 Voyager which is all I need for the highway.

Even better yet.....just buy a used one from a fellow KLR rider......hit Craigslist.....ADV rider etc.

I bought a nice 06 with 10K miles on it and farkled a bit for $2200.

I waited, scoured Craigslist, cycletrader local pages etc...

Finally found an EXCELLENT used 2009 (only 6 months old, fully farkled) with 1500 miles for 4300. I think I got a great deal. I couldve bought the cool brand new 2011 Orange one at 5,000 but In all reality OTD it would have crept into $6100, unfarkled.

When I bought my used 08 in 09 I paid 3900 and the bike had 2900 miles (came only with KLR saddlebags). The dealer had new (never serviced) 07s that I talked down to 3K before reconsidering. If I was going to buy the bike for mostly dirt I'd buy the KLX 250 or Honda XL650 (because their both more dirty than flirty - made that up myself). The 06 should be negotiable below 3K (in my opinion) and that would leave you some money for doohickys and such. I've actually looked at an 05 as a base platform for a tracker project. Just can't figure the tank/front end cosmetics out in my head.
