Looking to buy a KLR and really stuggling with the decision due to the writeups on the 08 models. There are some really great deals on used bikes with some mods already done. But yet the 08 requires less mods to begin with. New bikes are nice but they don't stay new for long. Wondering if I go the used route if I will be disappointed that I did not take the decision further and just buy the new. $3K average for low mileage later model. $5K new and no doohickey to replace, better suspension, brakes, seat, fairing, little more power and probably more I forget. Probably spend $1200 on a stock 07 to reach equivalent of 08 model. I am looking for pros and cons of both from those in the know. This will not be my only motorcycle. I have a tour and sport bike as well so the KLR won't get a lot of miles. That is what leans me to the used side. That and I have to borrow most of the money I have about $1K saved toward the bike. And I know performance wise it will be a letdown- last dirt bikes were a KTM450 and a XR650R. I am now looking for a bike I can throw a some camping gear on and take off for the weekend. The KLR looks to be the best bike for the money. NEW or USED?????? opinions please

I was in the same place. I went used because I found a great deal and I am putting the difference in gear since I have not had a bike since the 80's. I could not justify the differences. The doo is no biggy. You can get it canged at the dealer along with the valve adjust and a oil change for a couple hundred. The brakes arn't a problem unless you are really going to load it up for touring. I like the looks of the old bike better. The 08 colors leave a lot to be desired. I figure in a couple of years when I will have the op to do some heavier touring I will update to the latest and greatest and hope they off it in kaw racing green like god intended all kaw's to be. Just like all labs should be yellow and Porsche's gaurds red. my 06 with 900 I snag off ebay over by Keokuk for $3300.

A week after I bought a 08 went for 4500 in wisconsin. ebay said 250 miles.

Just keep watching. I looked for probably 2 months before I fell into that deal. I will let you knw if I see anything.

New wise, Horning cycles in hubbard has the best deals around. no set up whenI talked to them. They had a red in stock. Very nice people there.

It depends on what kind of person you are.. :)

If you're someone who wants to be 100% sure of how your bike was broken in, go new.. If you have trust in others, go used..

I bought my 02' in 04' with 1200 miles on it for $3200.. A very fair price at the time and the bike was in perfect condition.. 11K later I'm still happy with the purchase..

Oh.. I forgot to mention on other thing.. I'm cheap!!:11a:

If you want to save some cash go used. If you can do your own wrenching you can do a lot of mods for the price difference of a new bike. I think the first mod should be tires as they greatly affect the handling of the KLR. If you plan to ride off road or gravel roads than put on more agressive and tougher tires. Of corse that's just my opinion.

Both my KLR's were bought used, I'm a ways from any dealer and do my own repairs so a warrenty had no value to me. Re used bikes, overall appearance and a test ride have told me what I need to know. Show up with cash, don't be afraid to make an offer. Bargains are out there.
